From Derby Dean, used to be Akkys mostly. They were sold to Fred Sherwood’s early 90s(?) , His son Alan was running Sherwood’s then n got a large house in its own ground thrown in with the deal. The company I worked for used to do his electrical work n we rewired it before his son moved in

They used to do work for me when I was at Smiths.

Hi Dean, thanks for the Calor and Gilbraith photos.
The Staveley Chemicals Foden is loading at the BTC plant - benzene, toluene and cyclohexane. All their spirit wagons were double shifted 24/7 moving BTC to different sites,a lot to Immingham Storage and places like ICI Fleetwood,ICI Huddersfield,Shell Carrington and cyclohexane to Nypro Flixborough until the explosion there in 1974.I’ve done all those jobs when working for A E Evans and George Bloomer. It was quick loading,5000 galls of product in 20 minutes and you could load and tip in there 24/7.Their drivers were on top money, there was always a waiting list to get on when it was own account work. Then Rhone-Poulenc bought them out and things altered.

Morning Dean.
Vinatex had two sites, one at Havant and tother in Staveley Chemicals Chesterfield. They made PVC powder from VCM - Vinyl Chloride Monomer which was extremely hazardous.BP and ICI made it and drivers had to go on special courses to learn more about it.Calor Transport carried it out of BP Baglan Bay and Gilbraith Tankers out of ICI Runcorn in specially designed tanks.
Attached a photo of the offloading point at Staveley which was near to where we loaded Benzene,Toluene and Cyclohexane.
Incidentally I applied for a job with Calor Transport, they wanted a driver on nights based at Staveley doing a Worcester changeover with their Briton Ferry driver on that VCM job.Unfortunately I got a letter from them to say that Vinatex were closing their operation so I was not required.I would have had to go on a course as mentioned above.I think from memory that full rigs were to be exchanged at Worcester, not trailer changes,to minimise any risk.It was 1978/79 so I’m a bit hazy.

One like this perhaps Chris. Credit to SCP for the photo.

Bloke I worked with at Argos used to drive for Gilbraiths, really nice old guy, Bill Wallace, run with him a couple of times and had a really good laugh when we were loading etc, especially when the manager with a Davy crocket haircut at Basingstoke depot was trying to give us a bollocking for driving the wrong way in the yard (due to said manager arranging the yard so it was impossible to go the correct way) he threatened to ban Bill from the site as he told him he was talking ■■■■■■■■ to which Bill replied in a broad Rochdale accent, you can do what ya f*****g like, I retire in a fortnight

Capper bought it back off that lad who ‘customised’ the motor and I can remember him telling me there was something like 60+ orange marker lights fitted to the unit, that chrome grill didn’t stay on it though.

Cracking pic of a Gallacher Bros Atkinson. Intresting that the spare wheel is on the front bumper,i wonder why they put it there ? Looking at the pic again it says something like J.Price ■■ on the side of the cab so maybe its working for a company called Gallacher ?

I’ve found two photos of this in full Gallacher livery, taken when probably quite new. I think the reason for the wheel on the front is that it has twin full-sized tanks, and so there’s nowhere for the spare wheel to go. Perhaps in its Gallacher days, a tyre change might be a call-out job, but an owner driver would be managing with courteous, helpful, friendly and efficient self service!

I remember ACKWORTHS I think from HUDDERSFILED area they all had the spare wheel bolted on the front of the grill on their Big Js they were in a green livery, they carried tractors for DAVID BROWN DONCASTER plus case tractors for dock work export if my memory is correct. DBP. SORRY NO PHOTOS.

No move since Wednesday…a couple of Dorset wagons courtesy of SCP.

Think the tractor hauliers were James C Ashworth, not Ackworth, there is a sepetate thread on here dedicated to them, they got some tractors on those old trucks.
