Cheers Dean for those Morfa Sedd Atkis on the previous page those stillages were for radiators from Pressed Steel Fisher Llanelli for Longbridge and Cowley
most of my memories of Morfa were hauling into Johnsons rolling mills West Brom, and Elwells at Dudley picking up scrap back to Port Talbot ,along with Richardsons of Oldbury ,regards Keith

I think the S Trutch Atkinson was from the Mendips probably connected to the owners of this tipper seen previously on here. The Guy Big J with timber trailer I believe was owned by Ian Hampshire-a timber contractor from the Medstead/ Four Marks area of Hants.

The Guy Big J is Ian Hampshire at the wheel , 250 ■■■■■■■ fitted and a 9 speed fuller , use to run from fourmarks to wales with timber 6 days a week , the trailer was an ex skelly that they used to bring iso tanks of liquid over in , i sent him the picture earlier and he was over the moon , he loved that truck ,did 9 years timber hauling and never touched the engine or clutch , would there be any chance of a copy of the original picture as it would make the ex owner a very very happy man  Cheers Graham

Ray Smyth:
Hi Dean, I am fairly certain that J. Howarth were from the Chorley/Eccleston area of Lancashire.
The letter J stood for Jacob. Cheers, Ray Smyth.

There was a Jacob Howarth, Ray, but they were in Makerfield Way, Ince, having moved from Blackburn. I particularly remember their Leyland Roadtrains

Thank you for your comments. I have just had a chat with John Wilkinson whose lorries appear on the Wigan thread from the first page.
He told me that the Jacob Howarth firm was bought by the Briscoe Brothers who from memory had Chorley and Eccleston connections.
The building on Makerfield Way that you mentioned was TI England Tubes from new approx early 1974, I drove their Atkinson artic for a year,
folllowed by a year in the sales office, then I was Traffic Manager from March 1976 for 2 years, after which I bought a TK Bedford 12ton GVW
flat lorry and became one of their carriers from April 1st 1978…April Fools Day. Cheers, Ray.

Freightmaster are from Kirton Lindsey Lincs

Dean, the Scania is ex Thorburns. Antony Woodward Carriers were from Barwell in Leicestershire. Mainly parcel carriers i think. Old company, but not sure if they are still operating.

Daz, RMC Routeman.

Hi Dean Gallachers were from Stanley County Durham, always had a nice liveried and diverse fleet, don’t know if they are still on the go or have been swallowed up by others. Looks as if the Atki is a subby as it also has a County Durham prefix registration number, here is a model from the Corgi Hauliers of Renown series of Gallachers.

Hi Gallachers were bought by a company called TAL logisitics (or something similar) several years ago. Not sure what happened after that.

Hi Dean
A while ago you were enquiring about Joe Elliott Earthmoving at Springwell Village, Gateshead and the possible purchase of a Mack, unfortunately I have been unable to find anything further but have come across this photo, which looking at the angles, was taken from Elliotts yard.

It is a shot of the Harbour & General yard next door to Elliots, who were civil engineers and as the name suggests they did a lot of on shore marine and coastal defence work. I think they built a new harbour at St Helier, Jersey.
The Derrick crane was used to lift steelwork and fabrications around the yard and was a bit of a local landmark.

Springwell and my village, Eighton Banks were situated on one of the higher spots in County Durham hence the aeriels.

The road roller and Blaw Knox in the foreground belong to Sillars a road laying outfit from Stockton, I think they did a lot of subcontracting for H&G.

A Bison and DAF can be seen, they belonged to Brian Olds who specialised in plant transport and had a small yard around the corner.

Brian went onto develop the Truckstop just North of the Washington / Birtley services on the A1M which he subsequently sold to BP.

To the left of the photo would be the Bowes Rope Haulage Railway Line and further over again would be Springwell Quarry, which is now a large landfill operated by Thompsons from Prudhoe.

Apart from the landfill and the railway line the site is now all housing.
