Kempston:
Great photos today Dean

Tim C:
Dont remember having a S.Trutch motor on before, anyone know anything about them ■■
I think the S Trutch Atkinson was from the Mendips probably connected to the owners of this tipper seen previously on here. The Guy Big J with timber trailer I believe was owned by Ian Hampshire-a timber contractor from the Medstead/ Four Marks area of Hants.
Well done “Tim C” on tying those two Trutch motors up. Reckon your right as an unusual name.

Intresting comments on the Guy will have a word with Richard “MaggieD” as he did timber in that area.

“DEANB” Anyone know where the J & I Haworth ERF is from ■■
Funnily enough, yes! Jim Haworth was an owner driver based in Eccleston, near Chorley, and at one time ran this 8LXB-engined B-Series on traction work for Bowker. That would have been the mid-1980s. At the same time, and for a longer period, his younger brother David ran three immaculate F12s on the same work. They were from a local farming family, and David and his wife Alice had a fleet of bovines as well. I think Jim was involved in farming too. I’m racking my brain to try to remember his wife’s name - I’m sure the ‘I’ stood for an unusual name.
I can’t remember all the details now, but the ERF ended up with J Ironfield Ltd of Clayton-le-Moors, near Accrington (I think Jim had packed up haulage) and the last time I saw it was with David Kay of Oswaldtwistle in the early 1990s. He’d bought a Borderer for rallying and then sold it, followed by an A Series, and then bought this B Series ERF next. I don’t think he ever had it on the road, and I think he used it as a source of parts when converting the preserved Transcon, JAR 53N, from a rigid to a tractor. I’ve a recollection that he used the whole back end off the ERF, axle, brakes and springs, and transplanted them onto the Ford. At that time, the Gardner would have fetched very good money from Walsh & Dearden, just up the road in Darwen.
Here’s the Transcon which Dave Kay converted from a rigid chassis cab into a tractor:
And here’s one of David Haworth’s Volvos:
Good stuff Mr Gardner !
Sounds like it had a few owners. Any photos of the F12’s you mentioned ?
That Transcon looks good.

“DEANB” Who remembers when the library van and shop use to visit small villages and towns.
This is the ‘Travelling Library’ I grew up with Dean, a magnificent 1932 Leyland Lion:
I was deeply disappointed when it was replaced by this purpose-built, rattly Bedford SB:
Good pics of the Leyland chap.
“rattly Bedford”
How could you Mr Gardner !!! I have a soft spot for the “Mighty Bedford’s”

“DEANB” Intresting photo of a GUY Big J4 with a tri axle trailer loaded with timber. I assume the operator (anyone know who it is ? ) was anticipating the weight limit to be raised and obviously it was not until years later.
Being but a ‘yoof’, this is before your time, Dean! Nothing to do with weight increases, this trailer is from the era when we needed 5 axles to gross 32T legally, especially with a trailer of less than 40’. That was the time of lightweight 6x2 tractors or, for some operators, the less popular tri-axle trailers. Three axles, but no ‘Super Single’ tyres. At a guess, this is a 30’ trailer, but with plenty of weight on it.
Here are some other examples of the short trailer 32T combination of the period:
Yes before i was born Chris.
However after reading your post i vaguely remember posting something about it ages ago. Am i right on thinking this lasted for
a very short period before 32 T was allowed on 4 axles ? With thousands of photos posted we have not had many trailer like that which seems odd unless i am right
in thinking it was a short time scale. We have had pics of 3 axle units but again not a huge amount compared to the normal 2 axle unit’s.
