Have just blown that pic up Steve and i think you are spot on,the initials are actually MMD and you can make out a bit more of the writing
on the headboard.

Hui Dean & AllThe Atkinson is Mainland Market Deliveries from Portsmouth
The 86 could be Pat Donnavan with Chris Donnavan at the wheel.
Cheers Rich
Thanks for confirming the MMD Atki Rich. With regard to the F86 it does have Grangewoodâs âGâ on the door so imagine its one of thereâs unless
Pat was running in there colours

Hi Dean
It was Greenwoods & Pat was on the Zanussi job for many years I think his last lorry on Zanussi was a black Maggie but I was in short trousers then lol.
When I remember I will ask Chris

âDEANBâ The TDG article was intresting ,probably have some more stuff on them somewhere. The article mentions a director, James Duncan - later he became the chairman of TDG Group, as Sir James. If I remember rightly, he started his career with J Spurling Ltd in East London (Silvertown?), and I believe that Spurling was the foundation stone of what grew into TDG. Maybe you remember Molo Transport in your area? That was a TDG company.
Heres one of J Spurlings Atkinsonâs.

I worked on plenty of those Austin/Morris half ton vans, they were nice enough to drive if the column gearchange wasnât worn. J & E Hall of Dartford had some based in the Reading area, as did the Gas Board. Changing the oil filter was a battle though: it couldnât easily be accessed from below so it was a matter of delving in the dark from above (the distributor was in the way as well) and undoing the long retaining bolt then dropping the bolt into a hole drilled especially in the suspension X member and lifting the complete filter bowl and felt filter element out from above with oil dripping everywhere and trying not to disturb the top part of the filter head assembly that remained on the engine. Then retrieve the rubber sealing ring from its groove using a screwdriver and a mirror as you couldnât see it without one, I think a lot of seals didnât get changed at 6000 mile intervals and probably a few filters werenât either!Pete.
Pete, I swear i was going to mention that you had probably worked on one of those vans when i posted that but changed my mind
for some reasonâŚ![]()

âstargazer148â Hi Kempston i havenât seen a Shanks lorry for a few years not sure but I think Biffa took them over.I worked for them for about 11/2 years at their Dunoon site, which they ran in partnership with Argyll & Bute council cheers RayThanks Ray, sounds like theyâve completely finished then, it was a big shame when they closed our depot down and then Bletchley depot, probably the best paid job in Bedford at the time. Nearest Iâve come to it was trunking for Argos out of Marshleys.
Thanks for your comments "Kempston & âstargazerâ

âDEANBâGreat shot of Sherriffâs F10 coming into Poole to Christopher Hills or the docks no doubt.
Anyone know where Sherriffâs were based â âI would hazard a guess the Sherriff motor was from Oxford way as thatâs an axon registration and would have been supplied by dawsongroup
Thanks for the info Rob,we have had a fair few motors of Dawson Group on here and there is alot about them on page 525.

No replies about the Atkins / subby Fiat â â
Hi Dean.
The Atkins liveried Fiat has a RR Nottingham reg and is called âThe Lincolnshire Poacherâ,so will more than likely be a subbie. I do recall seeing something similar at their depot at Findern Derby in 70s,a subbieâs name on headboard.
Those Dodge 50 s must have been on par, if not better than the Ford A series range

Hi Dean, do you remember me asking if you had a copy of a Long Distance Diary about a Berrisfordâs or it might of been an Atkins motor going out to Hungary sometime in the seventies. Well it must of been an Atkins motor as the driver made a remark about the rego being a T-cup BRA and I am now thinking that he was driving a Fiat.
I have been looking back through hundreds of Trucknet posts and I now think that it was Trucknet user Dreva or Bubbleman who posted the story which has now been deleted.
It must be out there somewhere.
Hi Dean,
The Tube Investment Bedford has a Wolverhampton reg on it so I would presume it worked out of the Seamless Tube Co. in Wednesfield, now demolished and replaced by Tata Steel park. The Bedford would have been blue and likely to have been supplied by Attwoods the local Bedford dealer, Cheerâs Pete

Hi Chris,
Quinton Hazell have got to be the first manufacturer of alternative parts for vehicles from brake pads, lamps etc they manufactured the lot.
I think it was Automotive Products in Leamington Spa or were AP part of the same group? Cheerâs Pete
There is an interesting obituary about Q H from the independent, he apparently broke the cartel of manufacturers only supplying spares and the firm was tge biggest automotive supplier in Europe at one time, he was Manchester born and died in 1996, sorry bit off topic.
Shame the guy big j article didnât show the rear of the cab with the big Gardner sticking out!
