Some absolutely cracking pics on this thread over the last few days. The Maxi in the pic of the Wild DAF 2600, Dean, is a BL (BMC) 1800 ‘Landcrab’ by the look of it.
Thanks for the comments Ro,never heard them called “Landcrab” ,i was a kid then.

Morning Dean,
Sadly no relation to me!
H L Smith are still trading and based in Albrighton 6 miles from Wolverhampton, I have always used them for the supply of gearbox and power steering boxes.
There i was thinking you had some wealthy relatives Pete !

“pete smith” Morning Dean,
Sadly no relation to me!
H L Smith are still trading and based in Albrighton 6 miles from Wolverhampton, I have always used them for the supply of gearbox and power steering boxes.
My last firm had a Fuller 'box from them, it must have been a ‘friday night’ job as it kept jumping in and out of low range on hills both loaded or empty from day one. I complained to one of my ‘gaffers’ about it but nothing was done until I had a day off and a relief driver had it, he also complained about it and the boss then decided that maybe something was wrong!
I took it back to Smith’s, first thing they said was “are you changing gear correctly?” and I said that after 15+ years of driving Fuller gearboxes I had a pretty good idea! We went for a test drive and with it being level country around there it wouldn’t perform. I told them it only does it on hills, loaded or empty, they still reckoned there was nothing wrong though! Anyway I had to leave it, they loaned me the rail fare from Wolverhampton to Birmingham, changed trains to Derby and then another train to Matlock. My gaffer had to send them a cheque in return. They gave me a lift in a small van to Wolverhampton station, there was a large dumper transmission in the back and it wasn’t strapped! The driver braked sharply for some lights and the gearbox slid forward and hit the seats, I heard it slide and braced myself but the driver didn’t and he connected with the steering wheel!
Anyway we got the truck back eventually and they had fitted a different back end to the box, they still didn’t admit to there actually being a fault though but it was fine from then on.
Pete.
Sounds like you had a scenic trip home Pete, with all those different trains…

Nay Robert, not a Maxi or an 1800 they had rear quarter lights…1100 or1300 I’d say.
Oily
Hi Oily,
It is a Landcrab I think, it is not the pic with the BRS Daf in but the B+W with the Wilds 2600, Cheer’s Pete
Your right Pete, like my teacher used report “needs to pay more attention”.
