Hi Dean
The last batch of photos included one of Manners from Alnwick, main business is farming but do a lot of low loader work and also plant reconditioning.

Thanks for the info “tyneside”. Looks a very tidy fleet.

Hi Dave,
I have always specified Hyva and have never had a spot of bother in over 10 years. Boughton equipment sits too high on the chassis so you are dragging another 4 to 6" of bin through the air! But as you say are reliable but have to watch for stones dropping in the sensors on the bin locks, sometimes I wonder how they get there! Cheer’s Pete

Hi Pete,

We do a lot of work on Hyva & I find them quiet easy to sort problems as we know them so well, Only problem we really have is changing the tipping cam for the first time as I believe Hyva must leave them assembled on the seabed for some time as they can be a right [zb] to get out, and the main lifting cylinder adjusting ends can become impossible to unscrew/adjust along with the gland fittings, apart from that they do a good job. Cheers Dave.

Never hard of Hyva before Dave, where are they built ? :unamused:

“DEANB” To give you an idea Chris, here is one of the negatives. :unamused:

Eeeek!! They’ve come out remarkably well, then.

Thanks for the article about TDG. Although much is made of Riding’s identity being maintained within TDG (and it is remarkable that it continued so long), those of less advanced years might not realise that this was the standard modus operandi of TDG, to buy out a company (usually family-owned) and then leave the original management in place. Outwardly, it usually wasn’t apparent that a business even belonged to TDG. W & J Riding just happened to be the last, and undoubtedly that was to Tom Riding’s credit.

I’m not sure when the consolidation started, I’m guessing mid-1980s, but I think it was inevitable, given the duplication of depots and services in their network, and the opportunities for savings if businesses (or elements of them) were combined

The colour ones have come out very good and the black and white are as good as you can expect considering they have been lying around
all these years but Paul said there was alot of deteriation unfortunately. Fair play to Mark he keeps finding stuff and Paul is currently working
through the black and white ones.

The TDG article was intresting ,probably have some more stuff on them somewhere.

DEANB:
The TDG article was intresting ,probably have some more stuff on them somewhere.

The article mentions a director, James Duncan - later he became the chairman of TDG Group, as Sir James. If I remember rightly, he started his career with J Spurling Ltd in East London (Silvertown?), and I believe that Spurling was the foundation stone of what grew into TDG. Maybe you remember Molo Transport in your area? That was a TDG company.

Spurling by Ron Waghorne, on Flickr

Molo Transcon who used to park on Poole docks.

Whites operated a large gravel pit between Wimborne & Poole that is now a landfill.
I can remember them operating Leylands and MAN’s but dont remembr them having
Fodens. If Steam comes on he may remember them.

Abbey Hill Group MAN seen here in Poole.

Early french flat top cab Volvo F10.

Pat Donovan Maggie. We have had a couple pics of his Volvo F86 before and i think he was from Southampton way.

Anyone recognise the make of the machine on the back of the Volvo as looking at the colour scheme i would imagine thats the
name of the company for the Volvo ■■

Not had a Crow Tanker on for a long time.

Not sure if we have had a J & R motor on before from Wallington.

Great shot of Sherriff’s F10 coming into Poole to Christopher Hills or the docks no doubt.
Anyone know where Sherriff’s were based ■■

The Routeman is probably an owner driver as the pic was taken when they were building the Holes bay road in Poole.

DEANB:

You found that one quickly, Dean!

I always thought as a kid these Morris vans had a look about them.

Hi Dean sorry i havent been on this thread for a while but i have not been felling very well latley but i am having a catch up on here now i hope all you all you guys are keeping well and good in your selfs i am very pleased with all the photos and the adds that i have just seen on this page which you have posted up on here today and i am over moon with the dark blue Scammell Routeman tipper which i have seen she is a beauty for the age . i think that truck started life brand new with P.B Donoghue London united Kingdom Cricklewood Keep the great work and i hope to see more old gem on here again soon Many thanks for your affects and time for keeping this page going Regards Days

Morning Dean,
I’ll have a guess at Sanderson regarding the Volvo and Hyva is a Dutch company, Cheer’s Pete

I worked on plenty of those Austin/Morris half ton vans, they were nice enough to drive if the column gearchange wasn’t worn. J & E Hall of Dartford had some based in the Reading area, as did the Gas Board. Changing the oil filter was a battle though: it couldn’t easily be accessed from below so it was a matter of delving in the dark from above (the distributor was in the way as well) and undoing the long retaining bolt then dropping the bolt into a hole drilled especially in the suspension X member and lifting the complete filter bowl and felt filter element out from above with oil dripping everywhere and trying not to disturb the top part of the filter head assembly that remained on the engine. Then retrieve the rubber sealing ring from its groove using a screwdriver and a mirror as you couldn’t see it without one, I think a lot of seals didn’t get changed at 6000 mile intervals and probably a few filters weren’t either! :unamused:

Pete.

I’m presuming the two Shanks motors are from your neck of the woods Smallcoal? Out of curiosity do you know if they still have a depot down there as I thought the only place they still operate out of was Scotland.

Hi Kempston i haven’t seen a Shanks lorry for a few years not sure but I think Biffa took them over.I worked for them for about 11/2 years at their Dunoon site, which they ran in partnership with Argyll & Bute council cheers Ray

Thanks Ray, sounds like they’ve completely finished then, it was a big shame when they closed our depot down and then Bletchley depot, probably the best paid job in Bedford at the time. Nearest I’ve come to it was trunking for Argos out of Marshleys.

I would hazard a guess the Sherriff motor was from Oxford way as that’s an oxon registration and would have been supplied by dawsongroup

Sherriff was from Nottingham was he not    Buzzer

I am sure someone mentioned this company recently on here. Roberts / Ross Roadways Volvo F88.

Bearing in mind how many thousands of photos we have had on here we have not had many DAF 2600’s on here ? I wonder why ?

Wild Group DAF 2600 coming through Dorchester. Looks like a Morris ? rather than a Maxi on the right ■■ Range Rover behind and a
Renault shed on the left.

Henry Streeter Foden.

French Volvo F12.
Anyone recognise the green Marathon behind, fairly distinctive colours and did Europe ■■

Western BRS DAF. Those 1100/1300’s must have been one of the most sold cars back in the 1970’s they were everywhere when i was
growing up a bit like Bedford Tk’s.

Barbour European Renault,no doubt loaded with whiskey and heading for the Truckline ferry. Think they were based Glasgow ■■

Cracking pic of a Foden S ■■? havent a clue, gives me a headache thinking about all the different Foden models. :unamused:
Seen here on the building of the Holes Bay road in Poole and no doubt an owner driver.

Kwik Save DAF.

Who owned this originally then Chris… :unamused:

One you might like Dean

Some absolutely cracking pics on this thread over the last few days. The Maxi in the pic of the Wild DAF 2600, Dean, is a BL (BMC) 1800 ‘Landcrab’ by the look of it.
