Poor chap! I don’t think any one has picked up on this question, so…

The first has no badge so we can’t tell the chassis, but it’s an Alexander body on either a Leyland Atlantean or Daimler Fleetline chassis

The next six are all Bristol Lodekkas with ECW bodywork, standard fare for the nationalised fleets in the 1960s

The two after those are Bristol VRTs, Bristol’s answer to the Atlantean and Fleetline, again with ECW bodywork from Lowestoft.

The last one is unspeakably modern, so I can’t help you! DVLA tell me that it’s a 1993 DAF, and the badge on the front tells me that it has an Optare body, Optare being the successor to Charles H Roe of Leeds, a bodybuilder once part of the BL group

The decker is on an Atlantean chassis. The Fleetline had an engine cowling that came all they way down. The first batch of Atlantean’s had a similar one piece cowling that had to be removed completely to undergo any maintenance. This cowling was later changed to a 3 piece one which only came down to the top of the engine support, which was exposed. Later again they put a (I think fibre glass) detachable skirt over this but a lot of operators never replaced these when they got damaged. The introduction of the AN68 models had a steel skirt which never seemed to become detached.

The pic below shows both the original and new cowlings and the one fitted to the Fleetline. NMP

Roadways Hire from Cardiff. Looks like they bought it from Unit Commercials,Salisbury as they had a tie up
with the company that did the sleeper conversion.

I don’t know about Salisbury but there used to be Locomotors in Andover offering sleeper conversions in the 70s and 80s

Indeed there was Chris.

“DEANB” Cadbury Schweppes.

Article from 1969.

Another interesting snippet. When you think of the size of the combined companies under the Cadbury Schweppes brand their own fleet was pretty small really. Cadbury Schweppes Transport Services (CSTS) grew into a bit of a beast in the 1980s and 90s, basically a clearing house for all the manufacturing operations in the CS empire. It was one of those jobs where they told you the rates (take it or leave it) and operated on a self billing system. Quite often, the rates were best left rather than taken! I can’t remember now how it came to disappear.

I presume Paul has taken the photos in the usual vicinity of Ross, so I guess the motors might be working out of the Schweppes factory in Cardiff

Thanks for the comments chap.

Interesting comment about Cadbury/Schweppes Chris and their arrogant attitude towards Hauliers ! I recall that the MMB took the same high handed approach to their regular Hauliers which unfortunately was accepted with due deference/subservience by their regulars ! We only had one “run in” with this obnoxious Quango and it was Bewick Transport that was doing the MMB a favour with an “off the cuff” couple of desperate loads of GKN pallets from T/Park to Oswestry ( IIRC) so at the end of the month we invoiced the job at the agreed price as per our normal terms. Well this arrogant “bird” phoned from Thames Ditton absolutely laying down the [zb] law ! Words to the effect that " You do not invoice the MMB unless you have been instructed in writing as and when to invoice the MMB which will also include payment terms! The call was very quickly put through to me and I had to spell it out to this [zb] that we wern’t one of their regularly terrified Contractors and that our invoicing requirements stands and that I would take great pleasure in taking the MMB to task if they tried to delay payment !! Honestly at the other end of the line I reckon this Bird was fit to be tied down ! She was more or less screaming that “no one but no one” talks to the MMB “like what I was doing” !! and furthermore Bewick Transport would never work for the MMB again EVER ! So I couldn’t resist a retort and I told her that I had a better idea as I have instructed our traffic office that from now on the MMB were on our “black list” and they must not take on any further jobs from them ! Well there was just about steam coming out of the phone at my end I kid you not ! So I calmly thanked her for the call and wished her good day ! PS We were paid promptly at the end of the month following ! I also recall that our Traffic office Lads dared me to send this Bird at Thames Ditton a BTS calendar the following Christmas for her desk !! Happy Days, Dennis.

Nothing worse than large companies bullying smaller companies into working for what they think the rate should be.
Its lovely when you can tell them to jog on and find someone else !

Anyone know where the Roadways Container Scania is from ■■

I don’t think you can identify which depot from looking at the motor but, in the 2000s, RCL had depots in Southampton, Felixstowe, Barking, Birmingham (replaced by Birch Coppice), Trafford Park, Leeds and Coatbridge. I think it was 2008 when it was privately bought out from Maersk, but it was later acquired by Maritime and then disappeared.

Thanks for the info “roadcruiser” Funny you should mention Maersk i was talking to one of his daughters on a roof top bar
in Bangkok back in 2014.

According to my notes ,Roadways Containers Scania - Fleet no 4432 was a Southampton based motor…

This will be the DAF DB250 chassis married to an Optare body. It was essentially an updated MCW Metrobus albeit with DAF engines as opposed to Gardners. I seem to remember that Optare bought the rights to this at the same time as they took on MCW Metrorider. They developed the Metrorider themselves and collaborated with DAF to produce the decker chassis.

Thanks, I’m always interested in old articles like this so the more the merrier

Some foreign motors either heading to or from Truckline,Poole.

MAHE DAF were regulars through Poole. Anyone know where they were from in France ?

Another regular through Poole was OTA. Anyone know what OTA stands for and are they finished as cant
remeber seeing one for years. Were they owner drivers on here as i seem to remember there were alot
with Ford Transcontinentals on OTA ■■

This RABA was a long way from home, Zagreb,Croatia. Bearing in mind the pic was taken back in the 1970’s what
an unusual axle set up,running on 6 axles. Anyone know what the weight limit was in Croatia back then ? Is the
first axle on the trailer a steer axle or lift axle ?

Landais Transport DAF who are from near Nantes. These motors have been coming through Poole since the late 1970’s
and are still going today. Deliver alot of Manitou forklifts to Ferndown. They use to and probably still do load alot of
paper from a paper mill in the Lake District, think it was Workington.

Zurel Dutch Scania. Probably a flower truck.

Le Calvez Renault. Remember seeing these around, anyone know if they are still going ■■

Tidy looking Dutch Mercedes.I imagine this is another flower truck.

They were from Milton Keynes Dean, predominately a vehicle hire company to the waste industry with dustcarts, skip lorries and rollonoffs. I used them quite a bit at Smiths, if a driver was on annual leave his lorry was parked up and I hired a trio motor for an agency driver to drive, shanks also used them quite a bit, haven’t seen them around for a while so maybe taken over?

Think you are right from memory, I’ve been to their yards loads of times but the memory isn’t what it was, they definitely had a yard at bleak hall.

Hi Dean
Couple of weeks ago you posted this picture of GM Pearson’s Sed Ak and I gave a little info on them. Just found this bus on another TN thread and it is one of 6 bought by Pearsons to ferry the workmen around the various sites, it is now in preservation. I have also found a cutting from 1966 advertising their new builds.

That certainly looks like that 1st axle was added later on, has a bit of a Italian look to it, with those single wheels…?

I remember those Raba’s and the likes very well when I came along with me old man as a nipper, a lot of blue-ish smoke and no speed at all!

Zurel was a dutch firm Dean, specialised in hauling flowers. There were always rumours that the Zurel name on the side of the units had gold in it! Never found out if that was true though or not…
They changed livery in the mid 90s I believe, plain white with some odd symbols here and there. Went bankrupt in the early noughties.
