Hi Dean
re the Annis Foden. Does the model number mean sheâs got a 180 Gardner?
At 60 tons?
It would be a long shift in that. Unlikely to get any speeding tickets, thatâs for sure!
Maybe the second unit would be pushing the trailer!
Hi Dean, The lorry behind the W.H.Cowburn & Cowper Scammell Tanker looks like a Seddon.
The owners of the Seddon was W.G.Suckling from Stanley Abbatoir in Liverpool, one of the
biggest meat companies on Merseyside.
Hi Dean, the Tennaco Organics Sed/Atk was a contract motor from Western Transport in Avonmouth,The chemical works were just along the road from the yard,Cheers Bubbs,

Like you say would not have been the quickest motor chap. Mind you can you imagine driving the
first Scammell 100 tonner which had a petrol engine and was about 95 bhp from memory !

Poor chap! I donât think any one has picked up on this question, soâŚ
The first has no badge so we canât tell the chassis, but itâs an Alexander body on either a Leyland Atlantean or Daimler Fleetline chassis
The next six are all Bristol Lodekkas with ECW bodywork, standard fare for the nationalised fleets in the 1960s
The two after those are Bristol VRTs, Bristolâs answer to the Atlantean and Fleetline, again with ECW bodywork from Lowestoft.
The last one is unspeakably modern, so I canât help you! DVLA tell me that itâs a 1993 DAF, and the badge on the front tells me that it has an Optare body, Optare being the successor to Charles H Roe of Leeds, a bodybuilder once part of the BL group

Roadways Hire from Cardiff. Looks like they bought it from Unit Commercials,Salisbury as they had a tie up
with the company that did the sleeper conversion.
I donât know about Salisbury but there used to be Locomotors in Andover offering sleeper conversions in the 70s and 80s
Is there a future in the EEC for Britainâs small independent truck makers ?

Well we know the answer now, of course! Actually, though, itâs an interesting article by the late JD-S (as so many were) and takes you back to the day when Comical Motor was a respected journal staffed by qualified, thoughtful and objective people.
Another interesting snippet. When you think of the size of the combined companies under the Cadbury Schweppes brand their own fleet was pretty small really. Cadbury Schweppes Transport Services (CSTS) grew into a bit of a beast in the 1980s and 90s, basically a clearing house for all the manufacturing operations in the CS empire. It was one of those jobs where they told you the rates (take it or leave it) and operated on a self billing system. Quite often, the rates were best left rather than taken! I canât remember now how it came to disappear.
I presume Paul has taken the photos in the usual vicinity of Ross, so I guess the motors might be working out of the Schweppes factory in Cardiff

Interesting comment about Cadbury/Schweppes Chris and their arrogant attitude towards Hauliers ! I recall that the MMB took the same high handed approach to their regular Hauliers which unfortunately was accepted with due deference/subservience by their regulars ! We only had one ârun inâ with this obnoxious Quango and it was Bewick Transport that was doing the MMB a favour with an âoff the cuffâ couple of desperate loads of GKN pallets from T/Park to Oswestry ( IIRC) so at the end of the month we invoiced the job at the agreed price as per our normal terms. Well this arrogant âbirdâ phoned from Thames Ditton absolutely laying down the â â â â â â â law ! Words to the effect that " You do not invoice the MMB unless you have been instructed in writing as and when to invoice the MMB which will also include payment terms! The call was very quickly put through to me and I had to spell it out to this â â â â that we wernât one of their regularly terrified Contractors and that our invoicing requirements stands and that I would take great pleasure in taking the MMB to task if they tried to delay payment !! Honestly at the other end of the line I reckon this Bird was fit to be tied down ! She was more or less screaming that âno one but no oneâ talks to the MMB âlike what I was doingâ !! and furthermore Bewick Transport would never work for the MMB again EVER ! So I couldnât resist a retort and I told her that I had a better idea as I have instructed our traffic office that from now on the MMB were on our âblack listâ and they must not take on any further jobs from them ! Well there was just about steam coming out of the phone at my end I kid you not ! So I calmly thanked her for the call and wished her good day ! PS We were paid promptly at the end of the month following ! I also recall that our Traffic office Lads dared me to send this Bird at Thames Ditton a BTS calendar the following Christmas for her desk !! Happy Days, Dennis.

Anyone know where the Roadways Container Scania is from â â
I donât think you can identify which depot from looking at the motor but, in the 2000s, RCL had depots in Southampton, Felixstowe, Barking, Birmingham (replaced by Birch Coppice), Trafford Park, Leeds and Coatbridge. I think it was 2008 when it was privately bought out from Maersk, but it was later acquired by Maritime and then disappeared.[/quot

You are dead right there Chris ! Itâs a pity more Hauliers didnât stand up for themselves against these little ânapoleonsâ who infested some of these big outfits. We may not have been unique by any means but I can say that our regular customer list were very decent people to deal with and I always had a great rapport with them over many years. However it now seems that with the erosion of time it is now a much harder industry to operate in so I am really glad to no longer be part of it ! I could write a book on the times I had to stand my ground in negotiations and then afterwards I was complimented ( back handedley of course) by my Customer for sticking to my guns ! It was called respect I believe ! Interesting but Happy days ! Regards Dennis.
