Buzzer:
Hi Dean the Volvo F88 240 has a Hampshire registration plate so was probably sold by Princes Commercials, it was first registered in August 1974 and was red in colour and the last time a logbook was issued was the 16th May 1985, cheers Buzze

Dean an update, I have spoken to Richard Evans and he gave me a bit of history on the F88 and he believes it was new to Eurohaul who had a yard near Lorraines lorry park and then it went on to an owner driver with a couple of trucks Keith Ozzard who ran on containers out of the docks, he sold it to Richard of R&A on a Saturday morning and he & wife Angie shipped out to Clermond Ferrand on its first trip abroad that weekend, Richard said he would dig some picture out of said vehicle and post for you. Now I feel like Sherlock Holmes

The year before I joined Princes. I remember Eurohaul well, they were a good customer of Eric Pettit’s, cant recall the owners name but I do have a photo of him in a group if interested. Harvey.
PS, back then we collected, from Portsmouth office, a strip of about 30 registration numbers at a time and therefore were able to offer a limited choice to customers so, if Eurohaul for instance ordered 4 trucks, he may get 3 consecutive, miss one, (that went to an owner driver) and then the 4th. OK, back to sleep.

Don’t recognise the merc but the location is correct, looks like he’s overtaking a 1600E he must have been giving her big licks or the cortina wasn’t trying

Hi,
I think it’s a pretty safe bet that the red ERF belonged to Ken Mcdonald ( K & M Tpt: ) from Swansea.
He set up on his own after driving for Lloyd Bros Gorseinon back in the day and ran a few motors with his sons driving the others.
Before I retired in 2011 i would see them at Colour Steels in Crosskeys from where they did a lot of work.
The photo could well have been taken on the A467 towards Crosskeys
Regards, Allan

Ah, TRB 131K. That brings back memories and thanks for posting it.

Driven from new at Ballidon quarry by Sam Hambleton, then when Sam had a new M Reg S80 it went to Kevin quarry where Bill Clowes (Grey Stokie on here) had it. When I started there in 1975 the late Derek Booth had it, as it has a white instead of Mercedes Red bumper I’m guessing the pic is from when Derek had it? I’m not sure if it was one that was recabbed with a S40 but it’s sister truck (TRB 130K, Dennis Wibberley and later Colin Critchlow) certainly was. I have a colour pic of TRB somewhere on a Motorway when Sam had it.

Edited to say that I have now found the pic of ‘Big Sam’ in full flight, click on the image to enlarge it. Not my pic by the way.

‘Big Sam’ Hambleton was probably the first employee of the man who started Ballidon quarry in the 1940’s (Herbert Plumbley) as he worked as a butcher’s apprentice for him at his shop in Ashbourne. Sam told me that the war was on and stone was required for the local airfields so Herbert told Sam that they were going quarrying instead of butchering and would he come with him? They first quarried at Kniveton and then started at Ballidon, Sam stayed there until ill health forced his retirement! One day Herbert asked Sam if he could drive a lorry; “Yes, but I haven’t a licence” was Sam’s reply. Herbert said “Don’t worry, I will find you a licence” and that was how he became a driver! Apart from Bill Clowes all the other lads I mentioned are now long gone alas.

Pete.

Happy days Pete ! Always nice when someone sees a motor they know and thanks for the comments and pic.

Particularly liked the “I will find you a license”

Frankydobo:
I’ve lightened and resized the Dodge pic Dene but I think it says something like JBM on the door, its not in JCB colours anyway, I hope that’s a crane jib in the distance behind him and not an aerial for his radio on the roof!

Thanks for the comment Franky.

Never gave them a thought Buzzer, but i think you are right. Looked at some old pics and definately the same strip.
It looks like they either had another company called SJB Transport or this company used to buy there trucks second
hand possibly as also has the same strip and the pic is taken in Poole where Cutler’s were from. Someone may know
more about SJB Tpt ■■

my dad ran coaches and he was going to buy a VAL with duple bodywork, but chucked the coaches in and just concentrated on his lorries , i had the misfortune of loading a VAL once, he only bought the bloody thing for the engine gearbox and axles, took the roof out in market harborough , dad said 'it’ll be ok keep going , shortly followed by a rather loud crunch.
