Hi Dean the Volvo F88 240 has a Hampshire registration plate so was probably sold by Princes Commercials, it was first registered in August 1974 and was red in colour and the last time a logbook was issued was the 16th May 1985, cheers Buzze
Dean an update, I have spoken to Richard Evans and he gave me a bit of history on the F88 and he believes it was new to Eurohaul who had a yard near Lorraines lorry park and then it went on to an owner driver with a couple of trucks Keith Ozzard who ran on containers out of the docks, he sold it to Richard of R&A on a Saturday morning and he & wife Angie shipped out to Clermond Ferrand on its first trip abroad that weekend, Richard said he would dig some picture out of said vehicle and post for you. Now I feel like Sherlock Holmes
You’re spoiling us Foden men Dean! This is sister of the one I had, just a month, I think Pete drove one for longer. Cheers Coomsey

I only drove them as a fitter Paul, we had a large fleet of them of course replacing the AEC Marshalls. I was mainly taking them for annual test or up to Middleton St George near Darlington for recabbing with S40 cabs. I did do a few days relief driving in one when a driver was off but only the local Midlands area and not distance, the full time drivers did the long runs! I started driving full time around '83/84 but they had all long gone by then though.
Pete.

Hi Dean,
Hope you are well, thanks for all your postings on this amazing thread, Buzzer was indeed correct, his knowledge of transport and livestock is second to none, here as promised some pics when we owned it, the pic under the straddler was taken in Trieste docks so she certainly earned her keep !
Regards
Richard

Yeah that does look a bit odd Oily. Went in one of those as a kid. It was one of the rare ones with a Maserati engine in
and i think there were only a limited number built. It may have been a SM rather than a DS, and the thing i always
remembered was how comfortable it was. Thanks for the Foden pics.

Ah, TRB 131K. That brings back memories and thanks for posting it.
Driven from new at Ballidon quarry by Sam Hambleton, then when Sam had a new M Reg S80 it went to Kevin quarry where Bill Clowes (Grey Stokie on here) had it. When I started there in 1975 the late Derek Booth had it, as it has a white instead of Mercedes Red bumper I’m guessing the pic is from when Derek had it? I’m not sure if it was one that was recabbed with a S40 but it’s sister truck (TRB 130K, Dennis Wibberley and later Colin Critchlow) certainly was. I have a colour pic of TRB somewhere on a Motorway when Sam had it.
Edited to say that I have now found the pic of ‘Big Sam’ in full flight, click on the image to enlarge it. Not my pic by the way.
‘Big Sam’ Hambleton was probably the first employee of the man who started Ballidon quarry in the 1940’s (Herbert Plumbley) as he worked as a butcher’s apprentice for him at his shop in Ashbourne. Sam told me that the war was on and stone was required for the local airfields so Herbert told Sam that they were going quarrying instead of butchering and would he come with him? They first quarried at Kniveton and then started at Ballidon, Sam stayed there until ill health forced his retirement! One day Herbert asked Sam if he could drive a lorry; “Yes, but I haven’t a licence” was Sam’s reply. Herbert said “Don’t worry, I will find you a licence” and that was how he became a driver! Apart from Bill Clowes all the other lads I mentioned are now long gone alas.
Pete.
