Hi Dean,
Cracking shot of the F86 of Smiths Flour Mills, this was based at Walsall and was sprayed a creamy white colour later in its life, driven by a bloke called Stan if I remember correctly, it was the only F86 they had the rest being F7’s and the Volvo’s replaced Leyland Buffalo’s, only one Buffalo remained and was used as the yard shunter, Many Thanks for posting, Pete

Not quite so exotic moomooland. If you travel north up M42 2nd Ashby turn off 512 after that you’re traveling over the top of Lount opencast. Think they took 8/9million tons of coal .All back fill under the motorway was put down not more than 18" n compacted but the buga still moved.
Bludy ell! The soddin penny just dropped, am like an arse

The main reason for the half cab Dean, not sure no weight gain Windrush says. Looking at posts in Foden model list it seems to me there was too many cab designers at Fodens or one on cocaineMostly for insurance reasons as only one occupant SHOULD be carried, although we did have to fit another person in occasionally as Moose on here would confirm! However the insurance companies then considered that there was only one reasonable escape route in the event of an accident so the premium was raised! By that time, about three years, the cabs were falling apart anyway through corrosion and movement (they were sprung like most Foden cabs were later) and not as strong as the ‘dumper’ type cab with the rearward sloping windscreen such as used by St Ives Sand and Gravel and the windscreens sometimes dropped out when braking hard! I drove one to Darlington for cab replacement with a rope around the outside of the cab door to hold it shut, I couldn’t even get out for a pee on route!! Most of the 30 tonners were converted to the Motor Panels S40 cab by North Riding Garages (part of the Tilling Group at that time) in Middleton St George, Darlington. That gave them another three years when, as Tilcon had a six year replacement plan, they were sold on. Some of them then had a long life with their new owners, a couple of the powder tanks were converted to tippers and ran from Croxden gravel for years and they had done over 600,000 miles, not km’s, (plus blowing time!) when we disposed of them. Our tankers did a lot of distance work so amassed large mileages in a short time compared to the tippers, though they also did some longish runs to Scotland, Essex, Suffolk, Cornwall and even the Isle of Wight. Our limestone from Ballidon quarry was in great demand country wide.
The few 24 tonners we had were short wheelbase and couldn’t be uprated to 28 or 30 tonnes so they were sold after about three years with the half cabs still fitted.
Pete.
Thanks for the info Pete, particularly liked,
“the windscreen’s sometimes dropped out when braking hard” Quality !!!

Wasn’t it Entress that had the first Scania Vabis in the country? A D reg I believe.

The first in the U.K. was LGK 3D, but that was a demonstrator (it still survives today, with Ray Hingley). I think the first operator examples were on E-plates: early operators included British Ropes, J&H, Bowker and undoubtedly many others that chaps will recall
Salford Van Hire was formed in 1965 by Raffaello Bacci and today is still independent and privately owned.

the Car Carrier , JCD, stands for James Car Delivery, who took over Progressive Group in the late 60’s and was then taken over by Tolemans, JCD were Orange in colour, but this one seems to be just after the Tolemans take over and painted in an early Tolemans colour.Loaded with some Bedford HA vans if I am not mistaken Buzzer.
I had one of those, a light blue colour, when I first started as an O/D Buzzer
Cheers Dennis.
Amazing what turns up in old truck mags,an advert for the Bedford HA van.

LGK 3D was the first in the U.K as Mr 240 states, it was supplied by B+W motors in Derry street Wolverhampton and I think the salesman was Bill Wright, it was a demonstrator and was later bought by Rounds Transport, here is one of Bubblemans pics I have re-posted off another thread, I’m sure they had a 6 wheel Vabis unit as well, memory suffering today! Cheer’s Pete

A couple of the few Vabis that Wood’s had E andF reg, two were naturally aspirated the rest were Super’s ( with turbo’s), The two in the picture were F reg the far one Super, the near one naturally aspirated, nice motors to drive, turbo or no turbo…

DEAN , thanks very much for posting another Entress motor …that DAF eventually ended up with Roberts of Knighton at their Swansea depot …and then Knighton !!
Love the Trevor Phillips Foden …my father tells me that one of its regular turns was tinplate for the Metal Box plant at Carlisle …he seems to think it came to grief on the Brecon beacons …
Mention of Entresss having an early Scania vabis 75 …they had a demo that ran around in an yellow colour that was believed to be the first in S Wales …many thanks again Geraint .
