Like the tankers livery, unfortunately for some inexplicable reason you would never get away with that today
0Here’s another for the P C brigade :unamused:

My thoughts exactly. When I was a kid you could collect tokens, or labels, or something from the jam jar and send off to Robertsons for an enamel lapel badge of that famous symbol. I had one. How times have changed.

That’s why I really like threads like this; they dredge up all kinds of trivia from the recesses of the memory bank that otherwise would remain buried for ever.

Buzzer:
harryvr6 this Ian Lawson’s present motor owning it from new WHO 901V actually we had WHO 498V an F12. He had that for 8 years I believe before the rear brake linings were replaced for MOT and that was only because they had gone hard and they were not worn out, Ian does his own maintenance or used too so well looked after, don’t know who took the picture, cheers Buzzer.

Hi buzzer, thanks mate, I found the pic on gyles carpenters Flickr page:

There’s a few on the net, one on here in a separate thread actually, lovely looking truck that isn’t it!

Brilliant story too, to keep it from new its amazing, testament to the ‘I roll’ translation of Volvo!

Must be worth a bit of till now too. I love the cab, the way the dash is full of paraphinalia for the daily shift, looks well organized and turned out. Be a shame if he sold it really.

The old turquoise merc looks familiar too; there was an old boy pulling containers from trafford park near us, he was actually based in wood houses fails worth: a&b haulage, had a few of the same colored mercs, a bit home brew with added tag axles and stuff. He was working up until fairly recently, when you consider I used to see it on the road when I was a kid, and it was still going at least 3 years ago (I’m 41 now) that’s a fair amount of time on the road, he must’ve been well into his seventies the driver!

Tried to get a picture of it on the m60 a few years ago, it was really slow or he at least drove it slow! Loved spotting it though!
Incidentally Gary Glass still works out of the container base at trafford in his ex Astran volv fh.

Cheers harryvr6.

Looking at all the photos of tandem axle trailers we could certainly save money on mudguards in those days.

Smashing pic of Alan Kendrick’s Octopus. The only other pic I’ve seen of that is when it was new and it was pictured at Kays truck dealer at Mackworth.

He ran all sorts of tippers including a Leyland Reiver, Constructor and a Foden 3000 eight wheeler tipper shortly before he retired.

Hi, please can you help, I am looking for a photo of the Mercedes 814 7.5 tonne with a sleeper pod, I could also do with a photo of inside the pod, any ideas of how to get these please.

Try looking for Hatcher sleeper pods

Hmmm at first, I thought it might be Wood & Butler, but it isn’t one of theirs.

It’s pulling B+I Line trailer, but it’s not a unit I ever recall seeing in Fleetwood

In short, no help whatsoever!!

The Mercedes bulker with no name, a good guess would be Prosper de Mulder Doncaster (animal by products)

2017-07-17 18.50.35.jpgMany thanks to you and Mark for posting this picture Dean.
Seddon Atkinson 400 Series 4x2 tractor unit Reg No BCW 600R Fleet No 45 ‘Undaunted’ was painted in an experimental livery which wasn’t applied to many of Riding’s vehicles.

Powered by a Gardner 8LXB engine it was registered new on the 1st of July 1977 at a cost of £16,442 plus vat and driven from new by Kenneth Moon who worked for Riding’s almost his entire life.

After it’s life at Riding’s BCW 600R was sold on to Tom Riding’s brother in law L J & M Ball on the 24th of February 1986 for £1,800 plus vat.

One for “BonkeyDollocks” !

Tarmac marathon.

2017-07-16 22.08.22.jpg

The bulker behind the Merc looks to be one of PDM’s, if so it will be on offal or fat and bone possibly out of Hartshill near Nuneaton, I know they used to collect out of Treforest from there . I was yard lad at their Bury depot 1974/75 and have loaded these trailers and other types countless times. Lindley Haulage from Nuneaton usually came into us for backloading after running processed stuff known as greives up to PDM at Doncaster for further “refining”. I found Lindleys drivers were always decent blokes and were happy for me to move their F88’s around for loading while they were brewing up, I have’nt been near an 88 since. These wagons did mega miles and one appeared in a full page Volvo advert in CM at the time. The Merc is in the right colours for PDM but will almost certainly be operated by someone else as they made all artic drivers redundant around Oct 74 with the option to buy their existing Unit or a new one via PDM, and carry on doing the work although the driver at Bury the late Peter Cole, didn’t get the chance no doubt due to his face not fitting, that’s how it was there as I well know, anyway he got an immediate start at Reliance Tankers. He had come from Geoff. Reyners and made it clear he had no intention of going back on that roping and sheeting lark, but I digress. They also came in from Doncaster with these trailers and some newer types which featured in CM at the time. O/D’s from Doncaster I recall were Roy Moore who kept going with his bonneted Merc for a while before switching to Volvo and had a regular supply of “grown up” magazines for our yard foreman, and Frank Palmer and Cliff and Dave Gill. Dave “advised” me not to put as much on his second load one day as he was 37 ton on the weighbridge at Donny with the first! Which, as he was telling me was the reason why the 1924 Merc they started with had such a sweat on pulling up Windy Hill. Point taken. I believe PDM is now German owned and called SARIA.
