What a smashing looking Scammell Handyman in Philmac colours. Wonder where it had been delivering to?

Paul took the photo at Monks Heath on the A537 and the truck was heading West !

Very interesting … Not too far from my 20. I wonder if Paul took any other pics from that location, possibly tippers carting from the Buxton quarries?

As for the Philmac lorry it would have delivered to either Waterswallows or Topley Pike and was returning to the depot at Ellesmere Port which is where this pic was taken I believe:

T s Rees is about a mile away from me they are a quarry in Cornelly ,sammy Rees is the owner he runs a scania now

The blue F88 which I think was a 230 engine belonged to Ian Lawson, not sure if he bought that new but he replaced it with an F12 1980 vintage which Ian is still driving today and I saw him this week on the M27 with a 20ft container. Last time I spoke to him about two years ago he was tipping in a cold store next door to our yard and I asked how much he would sell it for and he said he had offers exceeding £25.000 any time he wanted to part with it, not completely original as it has an updated cab but never the less still working and looking the part even today. Think Ian is well into his 70’s now so must be one off the oldest OD’s still working and I think the finance is paid of on the truck, cheers Buzzer.

Yes, T.S. Rees an old company. John, when they sold up was it Davies Brothers that bought their Scammels. The N.C.B. Dodge OBO304M was probably based at Britannia transport yard. I drove OBO296M a 6 wheel tipper.

Great photos, thanks again guys.

hi paul,
T.S.Rees are still trading and as john says they still run some lorries. They are very big land owners in my area.T.S.Rees have to my 52 year knowledge, never ever sold a complete lorry to anyone.when their vehicles became to old to operate commercially, they were parked up and often stayed in that spot for 30 plus years.A family friend,Peter Richards is driving the scammell 8 wheeler in the photo, peter drove for rees’ for well over 30 years…
regards andrew.

Hi all ,re axle weights when I was shunting we would weigh out tandem trailers with two axle unit gross weight 32 tonnes which meant trailers could carry up to 20 tonnes ,when tri axles came in it went up to 38 ,meaning we would put on 23 tonnes, then a six wheeler with tri axle went to 42 tonne now it is 44 tonne hope this makes sense cheers John

smallcoal:
These are the trucks we used for shunting in the 80,s loading trailers some are mr coopers from his joints day ,the first pic would tare out at 32 tonne, then 2nd pic would be 38 tonne

Thanks for your comments John, and the pics ! Do you know what the weight was for a single axle trailer ■■?

Just spoke to mr cooper single axle would be 24 tonne gross same as a six wheeler ridgd cheers John

The red french DAF 2600 is, I think, from transport Laurent in Tours (37), before they had Bùssing already doing haulage between UK and France. They also did the “Moyen Orient” with drawbars and trailers .

I drove a 230 silver grill on overland for Douglas Freight, an Isle of Man company - the registration IM something - caused me trouble at some borders ‘is nix English number, you must pay extra tax!’

IMG_0580.JPG

This was me outside our Jeddah agent - Al Addas’s office. Please excuse the pose and the flares!

This is the cover from some stories I wrote and the truck can be seen crossing H4 on my website, courtesy of Bjorn Jensen. What I’m coming to longwindedly, is that the L registration F88, appears to have the wipers suspended from above the windscreen. I thought by then they had seen the error of their ways! Not sure what year my F88 was, certainly not new, I had it in 1976, but the wipers are at the bottom of the screen.

This was a massive bugbear of my early truck driving- I cannot tell you how much it annoyed me on the Leyland and the BMC to watch the wiper scoop up the rain, only to let it run down the screen in front of you, as the wiper completed its journey back down, ready to gather up all the new and the old rain again.

Did the designers never drive the bl**** things■■?

I think its a shame Andrew when people just let trucks rot away, especially if someone wants to restore it.
I can understand people holding onto them for a while if they are still running other trucks the same
model/make but once they have stopped using them it seems a shame that people just let them rot
into the ground !

Thats an early F88 John you had there ! The silver grill, one handle below the windscreen instead of two
tells us that.
The wipers are on the bottom of the windscreen in that pic so am a bit confused by your question ■■?
Anyway from memory i think the wipers were moved from the top to the bottom around 74/75. :unamused:

I would say 75 actually, when the altered a few other things ! However i think what sometimes throws a
spanner in the works is if an older chassis has been sat around waiting to sell ,then finally sells but then
is issued with for instance a N reg when in theory it should have sold before on a M reg. Therefore if
there have been changes in between it can confuse the genuine age of the vehicle. Hope that makes
sense. !! :unamused:

Hi Buzzer,
Remember me to Ian when you speek to him next, tell him I have spent the commission.
There is an interesting story about his colour scheme.
Cheers, Harvey
