Ha ha i know what you mean , but i think the latest euro rating (6 I think ?) are hampered even more. I had a 2017 Stralis 450 last week and i couldnt believe how numb it was . Its like they`ve taken all the guts out of the engine . I could not make it pull away from a stand still empty faster than snail pace. The 510 Daf i mentioned could well have been a 1 off bad one but he is getting shut and replacing it with … another 510 Daf so he must rate them. What engine is in your Volvo and do they sell the 750s over there and more importantly do they have to conform with the same restrictions as the euro 6s■■?
My one has the D13 at 500hp and 1850lb/ft torque, it has a 13spd Fuller putting the horses to the back wheels, it goes quite well, at 63.5tons it pulls like an F10 at 38tons, at US weights (36.3tons) it’s a flying machine.
There’s no 750 over here, they don’t offer the D16 at all anymore, it was a bit of a hound this side of the pond and only available at 525 & 600hp. Emissions wise EPA2010 and Euro6 are the same from what I can make out. EGR, DPF and SCR and all the other alphabet soup of tree hugging crap.
D.T.Hunkin Seddon Atkinson. Dont remember having one of these on here before. Anyone know anything
about them ■■?

Hey Dean ,excellent stuff as usual ,love the MDW MAN, they had some super graffiti style artwork on later trucks ,i think Mark Hazell did formula 1 racing now and then ,regards Keith

A bit of a Q & A thing this but why do you think Scania have never entered the US market with any venom?
newmercman:
I’ve no idea, but I wish they did, then I’d be smoking about in a 730 Longline [emoji41]

Ha ha maybe you should import one and start a trend … was the 16 litre Volvo problematic over there i would have thought the 750 would have been ideal for long distance work at higher weights
Just a stupid thought from a stupid Old ■■■■, but I reckon you can call an engine 800 bhp if you like, but it won’t make it go any better than a 400 if the computer won’t let it.
Any techies put me right?

I never really understood the Scania logic, There’s obviously a lot more going on there behind the scenes than the trucking public are told about… Australia ( I would have thought ) would have been a big market for the upper end of the horsepower market that they seem to have developed but the sales here have been poor for years… I would have thought it would have made sense for road train operators to go for the big HP V 8’s but still it’s American ponies that tend to do the job and Scania seem to sit on the fence and watch it all happen… It’s not for the lack of dealer back up as there are Scania dealers in every major city across Australia…
As for newer motors being gutless… My old Detroit K1 will run circles round the newer K2’s in both performance and economy … which on paper are far more advanced… granted the interiors are a bit more advance in the K2’s with a bit of Euro comfort thrown in… but when the K1’s were designed a computer would have been twice the size of a truck, and if you had blue tooth you would have to see a dentist…
Disappointing…
A couple of trips back I was running at top weight B double ( Mass Management@ C grade permits …69 ton ) and in the distance I could see I was catching up with another B Double, at best it could only have been 300 kg’s heavier than I was running as we had just been over the RTA weigh bridge… When I finally got round it on a steep bank … Volvo Globetrotter 730 … Surly that should have walked away from me, and left me in the dust…
My preference for Scania is because they handle better than a Volvo, I like the sound of the V8 too, but not through straight pipes, they sound bloody awful, like a washing machine full of nuts and bolts on spin dry.
I hear you on the power thing Jeff, on paper my 500hp Volvo should ■■■■ all over a 450 Scania or 48 TurboStar, at normal weight it is a bit of a flying machine, but it feels flat compared to the power delivery of the IVECO or Scania
Speaking of things that sound ( not so good ) those kids that get around with 8 and 10 inch straight through stacks… the ones that whistle and whoop when they lift their foot of the throttle… I tried explaining to one of them one day that the noise was all their turbo back pressure escaping out the exhaust and he was loosing a lot of power as it had to made up again before it got stuck into it… But what would I know ■■?
I used to have a Merc 52… I needed a truck in a hurry, it was a canceled order and the price was right…on paper it was miles ahead of anything ( my old man persuaded me to buy it as he was a big Merc fan ) I did a couple of Spains in it and thought it was gutless compared to my F16… Then I ran with it to Rome and it was only a couple of minutes behind me all the way. It even out dragged me going up Nuntua… When we fueled up at Clusses it took 120lts less… I sold it with 600,000 on it and had only done servicing and a clutch @ 450.000, and I was offered more money than the F16… I still preferred the F16 and still thought the Merc was gutless… I’d love to have my old F 12 draw bar back ( rose tinted glasses )…Bustone 480 ( cough, cough ) Turbo Star… However … saying that I can still power drift my K1 of a round about with a full loaded B Double on the back…and that’s with standard exhausts… and no neon lights under the fuel tanks…
Thanks for all the comments chaps ,had a bit of a week so havent been on much.
“Jelliot” Talking about F16’s i can remember when Volvo brought that out and i think the first
ones were 470 bhp. Anyway there was an article in one of the truck magazines about an
Australian roadtrain operator who run mainly Kenworths,Macks and i think Freightliners. Volvo
gave them a demonstrator that did a regular run they used to do and it smashed the record for
the trip on its very first run.Brand new so would have only improved over time. I will see if i
can find the article and pop it on.
I put a video on Facebook of some Colin McCrae style cornering in my Pete last winter, I was on the lock stops and had it pinned, the safety and compliance director gave it a thumbs up. He brought it up when I saw him in the yard and remarked that the truck sounded really good. I was quite shocked as he is a proper stickler for the rules, but apparently what happens on Facebook stays on Facebook.
We get so much slippery stuff up here, it’s good to get it all bent out of shape for fun, gives you a bit of confidence that you can catch it when it happens unexpectedly. That could be the difference between going home or spending the night in a ditch or wrapped around a tree.
