That’s got to be the tidiest sleeper conversion I’ve seen on an Atki (Arfers)

Showmans Engine.
Hey up Dean the ARFER Atkinson was new to Stirlands of Nottingham it was sold on after 8 years service
It changed hands a few times when the sleeper conversion was done
Sadly it was destroyed in a fire
Cheers Gary

The only Renown that I know of is Howard’s big steam engine ,don’t know if they had the Atki but they did have a fire and lost a centurian .

JAF 15N.JPG

Atkinson Borderer 4x2 tractor unit Reg No JAF 15N was originally operated by R Dingle and Son based in Stoke Climsland Cornwall whose business dates back to the 1800’s.
They had over 100 steamrollers at one time, which they used to hire out to councils and other bodies for road repairs and construction.

Moomooland, you obviously know a lot about the origin of old Atkinsons, what have you got on my old one… RDC 746M.

Dingles owned it from new as Paul states, the R.J.S that Dean enquired about was Richard J Sandercock, the second owner as far as I’m aware and here she is with her 3rd owner, Robert passed his class 1 in this motor and used to pull his steam roller about on Taskers knock out low loader, don’t know what happened to trailer but the unit survives but is stripped down at the minute as the cab was rotten, the running gear on this motor is A1 as I do not think she has done any really hard work, ■■■■■■■ 220 and 9sp Fuller.

Hi Dean,
I do wonder if this is ex Mansel Davies driver,Colin Wilshaw driving the Transcon? Our West Wales expert,EC14 will know for sure.Regards Andrew.

Yes definitely Colin Wilshaw driving the transcontinental with an ex D P Williams trailer that Colin later sold to Charles Footman, I think Footman still has it.

Thanks for confirming what Andrew said ec14.

Didn’t Taymix come to a rather undignified end. Something to do with not being able to tell the time!

Hi Dean, Wm.Rainford from Liverpool were a large company that specialised in cement & concrete.
This picture is at the Mersey Tunnel “Branch” entrance/exit at the Pier Head, Liverpool.
The AEC Driver is giving a hand signal to turn right, no indicators back then.
Can you please put the Scammell Crusader on the Liverpool thread. Kind Regards, Ray.

Sandway was on the money! Operators licence revoked for serious breaches of drivers hours,

Hi Dean, What a great thread this is, over a third of a million views in 1 year, Well done.
This picture is the same location as the Wm.Rainford AEC concrete mixer shown above.
Have a look on Google Earth, “Pier Head Liverpool L3 1PD”, then spin round to see the area.
The traffic flow is now just one way, for traffic from Birkenhead and Wirral to exit onto
the Dock Road and Riverside area. Regards, Ray.

B&H Transport of Barrow near Whalley aka “the twins”, largely because they are twins Brian and Eric, there was also a filling station and small garage. They retired and sold the yard for housing a decade or more ago.

I’m not saying that they didn’t work for Walkers but it was certainly not their main work. For many years they worked for Atkinsons of Clitheroe who made gritter bodies, snowploughs, muck spreaders and other agricultural equipment. After Atkinson was bought by Econ of Ripon production gradually moved to Yorkshire and eventually Clitheroe shut leaving the twins to find other work, they kept themselves busy mainly on paper out of Darwen for SCA. They never had a foreign badged vehicle ending up with ERF ECT’s with ■■■■■■■ M11.

Interesting insight into “the twins” business, thanks for posting.

0Here’s a shot of one of their later ERF’s.

Thanks both

I’d suspected that Walker wasn’t their main business, although I remember seeing them in there when I was doing contract work (not steel) off the site - perhaps it was when they were looking for work to replace the Atkinson traffic. Now you mention it, I do remember seeing them around Lower Darwen with paper too.

The name I was mixing up was BH Freight - I think they were in Gloucester. Was it Brooke Hogben, or something like that?

And a smart-looking conversion too, though I;m not sure what the kingpin position was on the trailer in order to coup[le behind tghat huge cab!

Definitely not “arfer” job, though… OK, I’ll get my coat

P.H.Antell & Son Atkinson.

A04845p.JPG

Reputedly the last Borderer built and now immaculately restored, although sadly without the sleeper:

KAM355P by Arfon, on Flickr

Antell ran three lovely Atkis: this Borderer, a 6x2 Leader which they converted into a double drive tractor, plus a Mk.1 tractor for carrying their own preserved steam machinery to events. The Borderer and Leader are both in preservation, although not in Antell livery, whilst the Mk.1 is still used by Antells, and has even sprouted its own sleeper in recent years
