Moomooland, you obviously know a lot about the origin of old Atkinsons, what have you got on my old one… RDC 746M.

The man that could probably help more than me is Chris Gardner, who has just posted the selection above.

RDC 746M is a 1973 Teesside/M’borough reg and ICI ran several ■■■■■■■ engine Atkinson Borderers int 70s.Could be one of theirs maybe? Sadlers also ran them at that time.

Bowker Volvo F7

A03369p.JPG

Ah, Bowker 49, thank you

This was a very long-lived machine, and this photo was taken before its accident in December 1982, after which it was re-cabbed. I think the driver in the photo may be Tony Walker.

It was later re-plated to its design weight of 36.6 tonnes and lightened in various ways, to become the London Depot shunter, replacing an F86 and able to handle trailers trunked down by 38 tonners. Part of the lightening involved removing the front anti-roll bar - I remember taking it down to Crick on a changeover, following a service at Blackburn, and collecting a a trailer from Heinz at Kitt Green on the way, loaded with 25 Imperial tons of tomato ketchup on two layers of pallets :unamused: . It took me 3.5 hours from Kitt Green to George’s, and the (few) lane changes felt quite exciting!

After the closure of the London Depot in 1988, 49 worked as a local shunter for years for a customer in Skelmersdale, moving lightweight product from factory to warehouse on a closed circuit. I think it was about 1999 when it was finally retired. It was put aside for restoration and the Technical Director tried in vain to get a fresh cab out of Volvo. It was still there several years later (see below photo by ‘Marky’) but, since the engineer’s sudden death in post almost three years ago, I don’t know if the little Volvo was ditched or not;

I was talking to Bowker’s MD about this motor this week - they’ve dragged it out for a proper look, but have found that the chassis is quite rotten as well as the cab, so I fear it’s the hot spanner unless anyone wants to put their hand up for it PDQ.

Didn’t Taymix come to a rather undignified end. Something to do not being able to tell the time!

He told me one day that AEC nearly broke his company.
His son drove the flag ship truck and did his own thing if I remember right.
What did happen to them ■■? your neck of the woods Dean ■■? Harvey

Sandway was on the money! Operators licence revoked for serious breaches of drivers hours,

Hi Pete,

Yes Sandway is correct,in March 2007 a Polish driver for Taymix/Translact killed a husband and wife on the A303,he was found to have driven for 16 hours without a proper break, and was given a 4 year prison sentence, and the Taylors licence was revoked in June 2007.

Still see the trailers about, so I presume they are still trading, with others doing traction for them?

a few pages back a picture o a PIE outfit with the small front bumper .well this was done by some companies that believed in an accident the bumper would be pushed back into the wheel causing the driver to lose control. strange but true.

I think that picture was taken in the Spring of 2004 Chris, just as 34 was being put back together and getting a chassis repaint. I seem to recall it was around the same time that the Wm. Blythe work was starting, because there were some very expensive Van Hool tanks parked behind where I was crouched taking the picture…

Hi Dean, What a great thread this is, over a third of a million views in 1 year, Well done.
This picture is the same location as the Wm.Rainford AEC concrete mixer shown above.
Have a look on Google Earth, “Pier Head Liverpool L3 1PD”, then spin round to see the area.
The traffic flow is now just one way, for traffic from Birkenhead and Wirral to exit onto
the Dock Road and Riverside area. Regards, Ray.

Thanks for your comments Ray.
