Hi Dean,
Hope you dont mind me posting this add that i came across in a copy of a November 1978 Commercial Motor.
Streets had a big presence on the roads back in 70s also with the Magi’s.

Regards Mark

The G Webb article regarding flyash reminds me of the time I was at Rolls diesels at Shrewsbury in 1980 on an Eagle engine course. The instructor mentioned a nameless operator in Wales who had tried without success to claim for two new engines from RR due to early piston and bore failure. A field engineer visited the premises and discovered that the two vehicles were running without air filters because; “They block up in a week due to the flyash so we take the filters out” the owner informed him! :unamused: The instructor asked me how often our filters were replaced as we operated in dusty quarry conditions and I replied that the dry elements were usually cleaned or replaced monthly. He said that doing that would cause premature engine wear as dry filters are at their most efficient when 50-75% blocked and changing or cleaning them monthly meant that they were inefficient for quite a while and dust articles could get into the engine easily until they started clogging again. We then did what they reccomended, connect a guage to the filter warning take off at each monthly service and then rev the engine noting the reading on the guage and if it was within tolerance we left the filter alone. Certainly cut the maintenance cost down with no apparent engine damage either.

Pete.

Talking of F88’s Harvey how about this one !

Great read Dean, thanks for that, Harvey

P4220087p.JPGK & S J Harvey & Sons Ltd of Old Hall Street Farnworth Nr Bolton are still very much in business today.
The company was formed by managing director Ken Harvey in the recession hit 1980’s.

One of K & S J Harvey & Sons Ltd early vehicles was this day cabbed Seddon Atkinson 400 Series 4x2 tractor unit Reg No BVM 198T which was originally registered new to Loravil Plastics in April 1979.
Powered by a ■■■■■■■ 250 engine it was purchased second hand by Ken Harvey in 1983.
Pictured here in the yard of Hipwood and Grundy Farnworth it is coupled to a tandem axle tanker used for the delivery of hot bitumen.

Another early motor was this Volvo F10 10 Reg No DAJ 585T which was purchased off R+P of Audenshaw with a seized engine which was replaced by an engine from a Volvo F88 290.
It is pictured above at Trinity Paper Mills in Little Lever near Bolton after collecting a load of paper reels.

In later years this Austrian built Steyr 19S31 6x2 tractor unit Reg No J840 CNW was added to the fleet.
It was originally supplied new in 1991 to Chris Brearley International of Brighouse by local Steyr agents Premier Commercials of Ossett West Yorkshire.
Fitted with an Eaton twin-splitter gearbox, lifting rear axle and high top sleeper cab it was purchased second hand off Chris Brearley by Ken Harvey.
After arriving at Harvey’s the lifting rear axle was completely rebuilt by Ken himself before he put it on the road.
Pictured above in 1995, parked in the depot at Farnworth, it had just returned from Bradford after collecting a load of paper which was destined for Italy.

A shot of Ken Harveys garage in Farnworth taken back in 2010 showing a couple of DAF 95 XF tractor units that he opereated at the time.

Today Harvey Transport Ltd, as it is known, operate a fleet of orange liveried vehicles including the new generation DAF XF’s and focus mainly on UK operations with groupage to France.

Hi Dean,

Buzzer is right it belonged to Matsolex in Southampton,in the photo it belonged to Louis Bull Transport who purchased it from them and later painted it in their colours,I think he may have altered the headboard lettering to protect the innocent ! Looks like Peter Phippen at the wheel,I am reliably informed by a very good friend of mine.

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this and other threads it is really appreciated.

Regards
Richard

You’ve made me go all unnecessary, Dean. A real treat reading this account. Good bloke, Tony Knowles- doing more than his share of keeping some of our iconic vehicles looking as good as they were back in the day.
