Hi all, Looking at the Spanish trucks and there marker boards, can anyone remember the coloured lights that were on trucks to indecate, was it weight or something ■■?
I think there was a sequence that had to be on to indecate something, back in the 70’s. “Gazza” did a lot of Spain/italy, maybe someone can tell me ■■? Harvey

Hopefully someone will know Harvey. :unamused:

DEANB:
I had some stuff on the Leader but cant find it. :unamused:
I have not looked at the photo you are talking about but they also offered the Venturer.
Now we will wait for “240 Gardner” to come along and bollock us all for talking rubbish as he knows a thing or two about these Atkinson’s !

Here’s a little something to be going on with until Chris turns up

This Atkinson Venturer Reg No UOL 620S made it in to preservation below…

Kempston:

Thanks for posting all the great pics “Kempston” . That Noble fella certainly runs some tidy kit.
I worked for a fella that had some 8 wheeler FH Volvo’s similar to the ones in your pics who does
factory removals. They are 32 tonners but weight about 23 tons empty due to the weight of the
crane and the heavy bodies. I queried this with the driver as the payload is a joke but he said there
prime aim is not about carry weight but lifting the machinery out of factories etc onto the artics.
Price wise they are serious money and were well over £200,000 each ! Intrestingly i was talking to
a driver last week who again was driving a similar Scania and he told me the rough price of those
cranes was something like a grand a metre. So if you have a 65 metre reach the crane costs
roughly £ 65,000 ! Now i dont know anything about cranes but just repeating what i was told.

Hi DEANB, I wouldn’t doubt that in the slightest, very expensive kit and no doubt expensive rates too! You are right regarding the payload, I often used to see them going out with little more than a 7.5tonner could carry but as you say it was for the crane offload really. I rang them, probably ten years ago now regarding a job they had advertised but it was one of those percentage of the vehicle earnings then so didn’t bother, no idea if it’s still the same now. In fairness I never see them advertise for drivers anymore. I saw what looked liked a brand new eight wheeler curtain spider being delivered to them a couple of days ago, full spec as with the others but only saw it at the last moment so not sure what make it was but looked like a Daf. Here’s an example of their crane jobs.

The Hedley ERF…straight 8 RR petrol engine, I think it belonged to S&R at Rothwell, strewth they could go up Standedge, loaded, like a rat up a draipipe, but the fuel consumption was slightly ‘concerning’…“hell, how many mpg”? :open_mouth:

They have a depot at Burton I believe, still see them around the Midlands and North.

Pete.

That ERF mixer of Bartholomews, I guess that Tilcon later took them over as they had a depot on Star and Garter Road?

Pete.

A yellow square was to indicate oncoming traffic the truck was longer as 12 meters.
A blue square with a yellow triangle was that oncoming traffic could see that the vehicle was towing a trailer
Portugal was the last country where this was obligatory.
In the early years they were obligatory in Belgium and Holland as well, as this picture “courtesy of Mandator” in the Auto Miesse thread shows.

Hi Dean,
Your neck of the woods.
Do you recall the name of the haulier at the far end of Allens lane, Poole. Off the B3068 Blandford road.
He specialised in Factory equipment removals. Father (grumpy old sod) and son, smart motors. Heavy cranes on units. Harvey

Hi Dean,
Have you any shots of the firm from, I think Wareham ? they ran some long wheelbase, dropside, Ergo Octopus’s in the 60’s/early 70’s. I used to come across them when I stopped at Durose café in Newcastle, Stoke. I think they could have been called Wareham Transport, but it was a long while ago ! Oh! and what was their main traffic anyone ? Cheers Dennis.

Unfortunately i do and trust me the son takes after the father very well !!! Thats the company i was talking
about in my earlier message regarding some of “Kempston” pics of the 8 wheelers with cranes. The company
was AET and he is still operating. But lets not spoil the thread by putting any of them on here !

You have a got a good memory Dennis ! You are correct Wareham Transport were local to me and the owner
also owned Dorchester Transport and Blandford Transport. There main traffic would have been bulkers hauling
grain etc. Out of Wareham they would have hauled alot of china clay and there were regular clay boats to be loaded at Poole docks back in the 1970/80s. I would imagine they still load boats to this day.
No pics of there Octopus’s. :unamused:

Not my pics but various ones from the net.
