Thanks for your comments Chris !

What’s the world coming to? A right-hand drive White and a left-hand drive Bedford!

smallcoal:
Hi all,you don’t see trade stands like that anymore that was when you advertised proper trucks ,that used to take place at Earl’s Court nowadays everything is leased cheers John

Cheers John !

moomooland:
Your right there John here’s another blast from the past.

Remember going to the sale At their yard not many motors about guess they had been on finance, there was an old 88 there, could have been this one…was a bit road worn!, would have been around early 80s?

Nice pic Paul !

HRS:
.At Earl’s Court you could “pop out” and find any Restaurant, Italian, Chinese, Pubs, whatever you fancied within a few hundren yards. Now at the N E C you are lucky to get a dried up roll for a Fiver. We all saw the best times. Harvey

Bedford.
Hi Dean, I am as ever, very grateful to see the pictures on this thread, However, 2 pictures really caught my eye.
The Mansel Davies Volvo F7 has an amazing paint job, and excellent signwriting. I wonder is it the hand painted
skills of a traditional Signwriter, or is it Computer Graphics ■■ The white Bedford TL with the cack-handed
steering wheel reminded me of my Bedford TL, shown earlier this week, which, if Bass Brewery had left its BEDFORD
name on, It would have looked much better. Regards, Ray.

I thought you might like the Bedford Ray ! Agree the Volvo looks sweet !

moomooland:

spike74:
Is the Volvo an F6 ‘S’ ?

It’s actually a day cabbed Volvo F7.
Most Volvo F7 tractor units were sleeper cabbed versions although the day cabbed version was popular for localdeliveries

Thanks “spike74” and Paul for your comments and pics.

smallcoal:
Hi Ray, mansel does all his own maintenance spraying signwrighting workshops for everything in his yard cheers John

I take i they are still a Volvo agent John. How many motors do Mansel’s run roughly ? Are they still operating some old ones
as when ever i went to Wales you always saw a few old ones that they kept running !

Jenson:
I wonder if this is a Volvo F 10

Kempston:
Great photo of this E. Hull of Bedford Heavy Haulage Volvo. Takes me back probably 30 years ago. I used to work for W.H.Allen of Bedford, a large engineering company building marine engines, turbines and very large pumps, E.Hull used to transport much of their products.

Hello “Kempston” Paul will be pleased that the pic brought back some memories !

1That was an interesting article Dean i bet those F10’s they refered to were like Rolls Royce’s after driving one of these Foden’s below…

Gwynn Bowen of Gorseinon nr Swansea had a S60 Foden as well …as a kid …can remember it loading at 3Ms …it had a Gardner 240 …Great shots as usual DEAN …Geraint .

Thanks for your comments Geraint !

Back up the thread I read the comment about Foden exhaust . On the Fleetmaster I drove with the 290 ■■■■■■■ there was a 90 degree bend out of the turbo , another one to take the pipe under the gearbox , another one to take the pipe forward and another one into the front mounted silencer . The first two blew off regularly and the pipe passing under the gearbox dried the wee piston in the range change so it would stick in high range with monotonous regularity . I got quite adept at taking it to bits in lay-bys and washing the gunge out with wd40 . Dave

marktaff ,still in red and silver but not with there name on ,that was a great motor but 13.5t so getting be dodgy with the weights these days ,so had to invest in a 18t ,trouble is now that’s getting heavy at times . Auto box is the way to go ,I got to next year before I replace my 6t with a very short wheel based 12t ,I am replacing my brotherS DAF this year with a 12t for him thought .

Thanks Oily ,I remember you posting that one .

This situation reminds me of when one of Riding’s Atkinson Borderer’s rolled over on the A59 roundabout
at the eastern end of the Skipton by-pass while carrying a load of steel H section girders.

Intresting pic Paul thanks for posting. Was the driver ok do you know ? The granada’s look the part i think
they were 2.8’s from memory.

Cracking pics Paul !

moomooland:
You could always recognise ex J. Shipston Brewery motors with the stars on the front

Perhaps the best known were 98 & 99 TTO, 4-wheelers fitted with 2-stroke engines and 12-speed gearboxes, and pretty lively performers by all accounts. Although they did some general haulage, Thos Fox were primarily fruit & veg merchant, and they later opened a Renault commercial franchise in Blackburn.
Bill Fox was the Chairman of Blackburn Rovers in the pre-Jack Walker era, one of his predecessors in that position also being a well-known haulier, Derrick Keighley, the owner of DT & N Keighley, also known as Dutton Transport

Thanks for your comments Chris !

These were a special build, as Seddon didn’t catalogue a 200 Series tractor - I think they were converted from 4-wheelers

I did wonder about 200’s being artic units. Thanks for the info chap.

1Chris Gardner may have a few comments about the Foden’s that Bowker’s ran as he worked in the office around that time i think.
Here’s another Bowker S80 Foden parked in Blackburn.
0

Bowker bought three of these S80 Fodens, at a time when Atkinsons were in short supply, and the company still had a policy of buying British vehicles (usually Atkinson) for U.K. and near European work, and Volvo for long distance.
Two of the Fodens had the ■■■■■■■ 220, and the third had a 250, intended for use on the “Flyer”, which was the night trunk from Liverpool to Bermondsey and back. They had very short lives with the company, being very unreliable and, in the opinion of Bowker’s Technical Director,
the late Geoff Whittle, full of design flaws. Even in the late 1990s he was still chuntering about these vehicles, and I fondly remember one particular rant about them on a Saturday morning, when we had more time to talk about these things.
The only detail I remember him mention was the exhaust passing directly beneath the gearbox, and the exhaust heat causing some transmission trauma. It’s a while ago now so I can’t remember the details and, sadly, can no longer ask him

Good stuff Chris thanks for posting.

Ray Smyth:
Hello Paul, I remember Thomas Fox lorries very well. One day when I was in Blackburn Wholesale Fruit Market
handballing Guernsey Tomatoes from my Robert Baillie lorry, a Thomas Fox driver came to me asking if I was
going to be much longer at the wholesaler where I was parked, because that was where he wanted to be parked.
At that time, I still had about 600 more trays to unload, (200 Bundles of 3). Immediately he was up on the trailer
helping me to unload, more for his own sake than mine, Fond memories. Not connected with the above, are you
aware of any decent pictures of Ripponden & District vans, they would call at my depot several times a week ?
Kind Regards, Ray.

Good story Ray, happy memories !

Will look forward to you posting pics of the new vehicles as you replace them Jakey.
Is that a UVB body on yournew MAN ?

kmills:
The green & white Renault would be RH Freight - or Rennie Hogg as they used to be know, from Nottingham

The whole RH company and subsideries were rebranded the RH Group
It was sold to the Kuane and Nagel Group by the Baxter family apart from the RHCV part which remains owned by the Baxter family this continues to be a Renault Truck and Van dealership
The Baxter family bought out the Europa Group a few years ago

marktaff , yes it is a UVB but never again , I pm you with why incase Terry is watching this thread !!! :open_mouth: nice motor but after all the years we had Marsdens this was a nightmare ,pictured at the movers show 2016.
