Kempston:
Hello “Kempston” Paul will be pleased that the pic brought back some memories !
Glad to be of assistance! I’m hoping to be able to post some photos of my own as soon as i can, don’t think i have any of E.Hull but definitely have some of Leicester Heavy Haulage loading out of W.HAllen and maybe some RJC Transport of Bedford too. There was a photo somewhere on this forum of London Brick Ridgemont Works which as sad as it sounds actually bought a tear to my eyes.
These photos have certainly brought back alot of memories for drivers. It will be good to see your pics
“Kempston” ! Heres one of leicesters for you.

This situation reminds me of when one of Riding’s Atkinson Borderer’s rolled over on the A59 roundabout
at the eastern end of the Skipton by-pass while carrying a load of steel H section girders.

When I was taking my lorry driving lessons the instructor kept reminding me. Always go steady round islands they’re lorry killers. First time loaded with coke sides on I got his drift.

Perhaps the best known were 98 & 99 TTO, 4-wheelers fitted with 2-stroke engines and 12-speed gearboxes, and pretty lively performers by all accounts. Although they did some general haulage, Thos Fox were primarily fruit & veg merchant, and they later opened a Renault commercial franchise in Blackburn.
Bill Fox was the Chairman of Blackburn Rovers in the pre-Jack Walker era, one of his predecessors in that position also being a well-known haulier, Derrick Keighley, the owner of DT & N Keighley, also known as Dutton Transport

1Chris Gardner may have a few comments about the Foden’s that Bowker’s ran as he worked in the office around that time i think.
Here’s another Bowker S80 Foden parked in Blackburn.

Bowker bought three of these S80 Fodens, at a time when Atkinsons were in short supply, and the company still had a policy of buying British vehicles (usually Atkinson) for U.K. and near European work, and Volvo for long distance.
Two of the Fodens had the ■■■■■■■ 220, and the third had a 250, intended for use on the “Flyer”, which was the night trunk from Liverpool to Bermondsey and back. They had very short lives with the company, being very unreliable and, in the opinion of Bowker’s Technical Director,
the late Geoff Whittle, full of design flaws. Even in the late 1990s he was still chuntering about these vehicles, and I fondly remember one particular rant about them on a Saturday morning, when we had more time to talk about these things.
The only detail I remember him mention was the exhaust passing directly beneath the gearbox, and the exhaust heat causing some transmission trauma. It’s a while ago now so I can’t remember the details and, sadly, can no longer ask him

Hello Paul, I remember Thomas Fox lorries very well. One day when I was in Blackburn Wholesale Fruit Market
handballing Guernsey Tomatoes from my Robert Baillie lorry, a Thomas Fox driver came to me asking if I was
going to be much longer at the wholesaler where I was parked, because that was where he wanted to be parked.
At that time, I still had about 600 more trays to unload, (200 Bundles of 3). Immediately he was up on the trailer
helping me to unload, more for his own sake than mine, Fond memories. Not connected with the above, are you
aware of any decent pictures of Ripponden & District vans, they would call at my depot several times a week ?

Kind Regards, Ray.
Here’s one taken outside Micro Screw and Bolt Ltd on Hunslet Road Leeds showing a couple of their Albion’s back to back along with a few other interesting motors.
