Ray Smyth:
are you aware of any decent pictures of Ripponden & District vans, they would call at my depot several times a week ?
Kind Regards, Ray.
Here’s one taken outside Micro Screw and Bolt Ltd on Hunslet Road Leeds showing a couple of their Albion’s back to back along with a few other interesting motors.

Strewth, that photo has just taken me back 50 years.

Yes it’s certainty a blast from the past with plenty going on in the picture with not a foreign motor in sight.

A few of our Ripponden lorries, out of the 7 which were on Leeds runs, would meet up at lunch time and go in Flemings café ( just out of shot to the right of the far Leeds bus )
I would have been a drivers mate on one of those 2 lorries if the picture is from 1968,which it could well be.
The building which the 2 Ripponden lorries are parked in front of is still there today, but absolutely everything else in the photo has gone.
Regards. John.

The green & white Renault would be RH Freight - or Rennie Hogg as they used to be know, from Nottingham
Thats the one chap !

That photo reminds me of when i was talking to a driver in London who drove buses. He said that you used to
go as fast as posssible and try and catch the bus infront of you (like in the photo) and that way he said you
had an easy life. The bus infront would deal with most of the passengers and he would deal with any
passengers left over.

How many vehicles want to be at that junction at the same time. I thought the driving today was bad!

Cheers John, it would be intresting to see a photo of that junction now to compare the two.
DEANB, Thanks for the Vancraft wagons ,look very nice , SBR are the best now as far as I am concerned , for a 1400cuft body they are £5k cheaper and better workmanship than the Unique bodies . I got one on order for this year .
I believe that Mr Llewellin, the MD of Econofreight, used to insist on the Big A being removed - presumably he let them take the publicity shot first!
Not sure about the sleeper conversion: it looks like the ‘Nightingale’ conversion sourced via Atkinson Vehicles (London) but the side windows like different. I believe that Econofreight had several Atkis with these conversions

DEANB ,the red drawbar looks like the Kellogs fleet but I am not sure if its a Brs Trafford park wagon as they did do the contract around that time .
Hi Jakey and Dean, Yes, The red Volvo drawbar outfits from the mid 1990s were “Kellogs”. I met their drivers several times at Portsmouth
whilst waiting to board the ferry to Ouistreham (Caen). I got the impression that they were Thompsons Transport from the Culcheth and
Glazebury area, between Warrington and Manchester, but no connection with T & T Thompson from the same area, who I think are still
operating today. I believe they were usually loaded for Barcelona and Valencia, then down to Almeria region to load back with fresh fruit
for the U.K. Regards Ray Smyth.
