I was just testing you “240 Gardner” to make sure you were paying attention, honestly ! :unamused: :unamused:

Whats the difference between the Borderer and the Defender and “Punchy Dan” was asking about this ATKI ?

Ah a nice easy one!

1964-1970: all tractors ‘Silver Knight’, all rigid tippers & tankers ‘Gold Knight’ and all rigid general haulage chassis ‘Black Knight’. This continued after the introduction of the Mk.2 cab first shown at Kelvin Hall in late 1967.

At Earls Court on October 1970, a new range was announced, using the same Mk.2 cab but with some new chassis frames underneath, together with new fuel tanks and mirrors. The new range was:

Borderer 4x2 tractor to 34T
Leader 6x2 rear steer tractor to 38T
Venturer 6x4 tractor to 45T (later up to 75T)
Searcher 6x4 rigid to 22T (later 24T)
Defender 8x4 rigid to 26T (later to 30T)

The names were coined by the late Frank Whalley, who was Atkinson’s Publicity & Promotions Manager. He also came up with ‘Raider’ for the 4x2 rigid, but it was never used in period, and not even referred to in period literature, although people now use it to describe such motors.

It was also at the 1970 Earls Court show that the knight’s head badge was ditched, partly because the ‘Knight’ range had been superseded, but also because Atkinson’s MD, Peter Yates, told him that they were starting to look like fairground lorries, with the A, the knight’s head, the engine badge and now the new model name badges

Hi 240,
Was there a 16 ton rigid called a “Raider” seem to remember Bostocks running one?

Yes stayed there often when I was at Brady’s on the Octopus and trailer in the mid/late 60’s which I note is 10 years earlier than the date of the article which also refers to the previous 5 years ! So I wonder if it had changed hands, I bet our TN member Trev H RIP could have enlightened us as he lived opposite the Sunset. And IIRC it was called The Sunset Motel originally but the passage of time can be confusing  But it was at the time I am talking about a decent place to stay, not that we stopped in any rough digs by the way  That’s one thing Eric wouldn’t do and I continued in that vein when I became an O/D but with one exception “Brays in Aldgate” but for a good reason to do with the Job! Cheers Bewick.

Yes they are still on the go "jshepguis, Alan James the son runs it, That wagon & drag was the only one that they ever ran, It was on a coal job IIRC, Delivering to coal merchants in West Scotland, I used to get a lot of work from them when I had my own motors,Good rates, & quick payers, They allways looked after owner drivers in the correct way, Happy days, Regards Larry.

What a cracking shot this is Dean! Make sure to thank Paul for me mate

And it does look like a Wrekin Roadways wagon indeed.

Hiya Baz, hope you are keeping well ! This a shot of one of the two J & J Makin 8LXB’s in the yard at Milnthorpe which I took from 60ft up in the air stood in the crane man cage ! I think there is a shot elsewhere on another site of a J & J six wheeler AEC Marshal probably late 60’s early 70’s. And I have some shots of the Makin fleet after I changed the colour scheme to a lighter blue with the deep white band around the cab. All the best Mr. Bewick.
