PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

blue estate:
Lorrys back then where so ugly but did the job and some did it well some didn’t , but you could catch the step or bumper and not need a degree in plastic welding to repair it , just a bar and a big hammer

No,blue estate you got that all wrong, lorrys back then were handsome and appealing a real pleasure on the eye most with distinct liveries and colours unlike today’s boring bland white boxes that all look the same easier to drive yes, far less appealing

bald:
DeanB, great thread
Thank you and Paul Gee for the work of scanning and posting. (and taking all those pictures )

Glad you like the thread “bald”

chrisb01:
Amazing photo’s,great job being done to allow memories to return, keep up the good work

ChrisB

Thanks "chrisb01 ,plenty more to come chap !

mappo:
What a brilliant thread this is…thanks Dean for taking the time to post them and to Paul for taking so
many cracking photos…i started driving lorries in 1971, so can relate to just about all of them, bringing
back great memories of a bygone era…having spoken to you recently, i know there’s loads to come. :sunglasses: :sunglasses:
Keep up the excellent work mate.

Cheers Tony, some of your old companies are on here and no doubt more to come chap !

robthedog:
Tidy Seddon Atkinson ! (But not as tidy as that bird’s arse !)
The Jameson merc would have been a subbie with an ex Christian salvesen unit

Thanks for your input “robthedog” i am surprised there has not been alot of Christian Salvesen
trucks as they were everywhere in the 70’s ! Found this Mercedes !

What an absolutely fantastic collection of photographs, just been through all 17 pages.
Talk about Buzzers ‘Mary Hopkin’ moments.
I wouldn’t say that I’ve driven all the models pictured in my time, but there’s lots that I have driven at various companies, and what are the chances of this, there are pictures of 2 actual lorries that I have actually driven, and a good possibility of another one!
Sincere thanks and admiration to Paul Gee for all the time and effort it took to amass such a fabulous collection, and to Dean B for posting them on here!
Thanks Guys, Pete

Thanks Pete, glad you are enjoying the thread. You have done better than anyone else then if you have
found 2 possibly 3 trucks that you have driven on here ! Which ones were they ■■?

Sorry “blue estate” cant agree with you on that mate ! :unamused: I much prefer looking at a truck from
the 70s and 80s to a modern truck. The old ones had character and looked the part ! Modern ones all
look pretty much the same,a bit like modern cars !

Thanks Mike, especially for pointing out the Meeks transport one as “Punchy Dan” was asking
about that company !

Joseph Foulkes Wednesfield, just about the first Scanias I remember seeing in the 60s. M1-M45 or A5 junctions on Monday 6am heading south. They use to make you feel almost inferior in our Dodges. The good old days  Mike.

Thanks Pete, glad you are enjoying the thread. You have done better than anyone else then if you have

Hi Dean, in answer to the above question, I worked for JT Marsden for a while on the rock salt, I drove the F88 and the DAF on page 7 at various times.
The Volvo was a flying machine, I was doing night runs from JT’s yard in Crewe to Blue Boar services on the M1 this particular night. The first load was with the Daf in the picture, got back to the yard and jumped into the Volvo (They’d been loaded at Winsford Salt mine by their regular drivers as their last load of the day and brought back to the yard for the night man), and off I went on the second trip of the night. Now this was the first time I’d driven a Volvo, it was normally erf’s or Fodens, or the odd Leyland for me. What an eye opener driving this Volvo was,it was quiet, warm, you could actually hear the radio, and best of all, it pulled as if it was empty, even with 20 tons of salt in the trailer. As I was coming up to Hilton Park services, radio blaring with me singing along, the Volvo effortlessly pulling up the southbound incline, suddenly cars passing me are flashing their lights, blowing horns and telling me to pull over, that something was wrong!
I thought to myself, I wonder if the tailgate had come open, and I was losing salt, better pullover and check. I gently pulled over on the hard shoulder and jumped out, a white car had followed me onto the hard shoulder and stopped behind me, I noticed it had a black mark on the bonnet and the roof above the windscreen. The driver got out,he was shaking, and he says “Didn’t you see the sparks?”, I said “What sparks?”, he says “2 of your trailer wheels have come off, one of them bounced off my car, hit the central reservation barriers, and bounced across the other carriageway, lucky it didn’t hit any other cars” (we never did find that wheel). The Volvo pulled the trailer with 20 ton of salt and 2 missing wheels as if it was empty and nothing was wrong!

The third lorry that I think I may have driven is on page 14, the 6 legger ERF flat back with the tidy rolled up sheet up at the headboard. If it is the one, and it looks very much like it is, then it may have belonged to a mate of mine, Dave Whitmore, whom I also worked for for a while on British Salt. It’s not a clear picture, but it very much looks like Dave driving it!

I think that B series logger may feature on the front page of hardback book ? The 6 wheeler Atki would that be a searcher ?

Hiya Dean, you asked the question about the S40 Foden with CB on the door asking who it belonged to…a few pages back and we were treated to a shot of an Atki Borderer again with CB on the door, well I’m no expert :unamused: but both have Stoke reg numbers and I would put a few shillings on that both belonged to an outfit named Chapman and Ball who hailed from that area, they ran tippers and for a while were active players on the middle east run…I took a pic of a Chapman and Ball model trailer I have and their crest looks very similar,Cheers Bubbs,

Ah a nice easy one!

1964-1970: all tractors ‘Silver Knight’, all rigid tippers & tankers ‘Gold Knight’ and all rigid general haulage chassis ‘Black Knight’. This continued after the introduction of the Mk.2 cab first shown at Kelvin Hall in late 1967.

At Earls Court on October 1970, a new range was announced, using the same Mk.2 cab but with some new chassis frames underneath, together with new fuel tanks and mirrors. The new range was:

Borderer 4x2 tractor to 34T
Leader 6x2 rear steer tractor to 38T
Venturer 6x4 tractor to 45T (later up to 75T)
Searcher 6x4 rigid to 22T (later 24T)
Defender 8x4 rigid to 26T (later to 30T)

The names were coined by the late Frank Whalley, who was Atkinson’s Publicity & Promotions Manager. He also came up with ‘Raider’ for the 4x2 rigid, but it was never used in period, and not even referred to in period literature, although people now use it to describe such motors.

It was also at the 1970 Earls Court show that the knight’s head badge was ditched, partly because the ‘Knight’ range had been superseded, but also because Atkinson’s MD, Peter Yates, told him that they were starting to look like fairground lorries, with the A, the knight’s head, the engine badge and now the new model name badges
