Maybe the trailer originally had a tailboard, then someone had the stupid idea that there was money to be made in hauling scrap?
With that taper barn doors would have been a buga to chain back I’d have thought. Maybes you’re right ROF, top hinge door wouldn’t last long on scrap. Remember chains between the sides, used to unclip em for scrap but they didn’t last long. I don’t recall any body that sloped out at the top, surely it would make it weaker n a very dodgy place to be when you opened em up.
Well I may be dense (I know!) but I assumed that the rear pillar is a lot thicker at the lower end than the top to presumably give more strength at the lower end? It is certainly wider at its base than the rest of the uprights.
Pete.
My turn,
Could we all be mis led by the dark mark in the centre of the rear “tailboard”.
if it was converted to grain, for strengh, could it have a letter box lower section, “split tailgate”.
Sloping out seems wrong whatever its use.
OK, ile shut up, what do I know anyway. Harvey

I think it is only right to correct you ref the Evans A series restoration , while the lorry was painted expertly by A Cooper, the lorry was actually restored at Scania Bristol by Mark Wiltshire,Brian Trethaway and apprentice Joe Lewis ,it was an extremely difficult restoration due to time scale and having to buy another lorry to cannibalise for spares ,it was only completed hours before company Celebration where it was unveiled to the owner who was unaware of the project
skane:
KDG 172P was ex Ralph Davis originally a drawbar lorry , pictures of it in Gloucestershire hauliers .
Can you pop a pic on chap ? I knew he had one,but you did well to spot that.

I agree now I’ve looked closer a little bit of an optic do dah. Only a maniac would want one leaning out
I’ve worked for maniacs!
TLS at one point had nearly 30 rental depots around the UK, and about 3500 HGVS on fleet.
They were closed down at end of 2010 when General Electric (their owners) pulled out of the HGV leasing market, and migrated the legacy of their long term rental fleet over to GE Fleet Services (now Arval)
