I remember delivering a load of absorbing oil or summat similar to SWTD Totton from BSC Chemicals Orgreave Sheffield. It was early 1970 and I had my mate’s AEC Mammoth Major MK5 with 5-speed box. He didn’t want the job so I swapped him.It was a long day Sheffield - Totton and back to Leicester Forest for a dodgy night out at 38 mph. Those days it was down M1,then off to Towcester and the A43 to Oxford, then A34 Newbury and A33 Winchester to S’oton.
You never had to worry about getting done for speeding in that motor then “Chris”![]()

No speeding not a problem, only going over hours a bit was a problem.![]()

Ha ha my dad had one of those with a drawbar trailer running at 32 tons ,mind numbing
Just made me think there Chris, i bet you would struggle to get a lift in these modern times alot of newer drivers wouldn`t understand getting home on a fiddleThanks Chris and Ramone for your input. What BHP would that motor have been out of intrest ■■

Some old and new liveries 3663Since the demerger of Bidvest’s worldwide food interests from the remainder of their businesses (they are now two separately-quoted businesses on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange), the food side in now seems to have moved on to branding as Bidfood. Bidvest Logistics and PCL Distribution fall under that banner, whilst Ontime Automotive and The Mansfield Group are now completely separated from them
Thanks Chris ! Its amazing the wealth of knowledge that these pics bring out on this thread.

Hello Dean i have been checking through my ARC Photos and i have got that Scammell Routeman in black & White but none in colour of it keep up with the good work with all the excellent pics All the very best to you Dean and paul kind Regards Darren
I think it is only right to correct you ref the Evans A series restoration , while the lorry was painted expertly by A Cooper, the lorry was actually restored at Scania Bristol by Mark Wiltshire,Brian Trethaway and apprentice Joe Lewis ,it was an extremely difficult restoration due to time scale and having to buy another lorry to cannibalise for spares ,it was only completed hours before company Celebration where it was unveiled to the owner who was unaware of the project
KDG 172P was ex Ralph Davis originally a drawbar lorry , pictures of it in Gloucestershire hauliers .
Although the Seddons trailer appears to have barn doors why is the last up right an off set taper and the body on the scanias trailer has a straight / parallel upright ? Anyone

Could it be to give the corner post more strength as the door design is generally weaker structualy, compared to the trailer behind the scania being a top hinged tail gate…
That’s a tidy sleeper conversion on that Seddon.

Well spotted Dan. I would say for extra strength, but why taper it, run it the extended width from top to bottom! Even stronger then, or are we missing something?
