Hi Dean

Great pic
That looks like Alfie Scammell at the wheel - yes, his real name!! :grimacing: A lovely old chap, he had a twitch which was involuntary jerks of the head. He always used to wear a beret so, strangely enough, ended up with the nickname of Chuck Berry… :grimacing: :grimacing:
Those old Routemans were well loved by all their drivers. They had a long service life too - some of them must have been 15 years or more old when they were finally retired. They were well looked after by the in house maintenance gang. Each area had their own dedicated workshop, looking after the fleet from surrounding quarries and pits. It was a crying shame when they were all shut down and the fleet pensioned off. In Sodbury’s case, the transport yard was sold off to a neighbouring business, who immediately knocked the workshop down and rebuilt to suit their own needs. Most of the surrounding land was sold off and is now covered with 21st century rabbit hutches. The last time I went by Frome transport yard, it was derelict but not built on…

Hi John

I think I saw you in Sodbury just before Christmas delivering…I certainly saw the lorry… I guess you deliver to all the concrete plants? Sodbury and, I think, Whatley have concrete plants on the quarry sites but there are lots of stand alone plants around.

Bristol and Avon did have a really smart Routeman, not so long ago. I believe it had a fortune spent on it but it certainly looked the part. It would be a shame if it’s the same lorry…

I don’t watch the programme but I am aware of it. Kings have got some really nice kit now  We do get Smiths in now and again delivering a dumper or loading shovel. Their kit is really smart, especially the Scania eight wheeler. All nice blokes too

Wheel Nut:
I admire Mr Fiddle [emoji12] I know it was in a different era but that fiddling home wasn’t for me. I have stood at too many bloody roundabouts to enjoy myself. I used to pick a couple of tanker men up who based themselves at Woodside or Mayphil overnight. Sorry Chris it wasn’t for me [emoji14]

Ah yes Woodside café, often had more John Forman and Bulk Storage lorries there than both their home depots put together, it was a bit naughty when some drivers would drive past Woodside along the A63 to the Humberbridge roundabout go all the way round and back down the A63 to Woodside, just to run their hours out, good jobs ruined

I remember delivering a load of absorbing oil or summat similar to SWTD Totton from BSC Chemicals Orgreave Sheffield. It was early 1970 and I had my mate’s AEC Mammoth Major MK5 with 5-speed box. He didn’t want the job so I swapped him.It was a long day Sheffield - Totton and back to Leicester Forest for a dodgy night out at 38 mph. Those days it was down M1,then off to Towcester and the A43 to Oxford, then A34 Newbury and A33 Winchester to S’oton.
You never had to worry about getting done for speeding in that motor then “Chris” :smiley:
No speeding not a problem, only going over hours a bit was a problem.
Ha ha my dad had one of those with a drawbar trailer running at 32 tons ,mind numbing
Just made me think there Chris, i bet you would struggle to get a lift in these modern times alot of newer drivers wouldn`t understand getting home on a fiddle

Thanks Chris and Ramone for your input. What BHP would that motor have been out of intrest ■■ :unamused:

Since the demerger of Bidvest’s worldwide food interests from the remainder of their businesses (they are now two separately-quoted businesses on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange), the food side in now seems to have moved on to branding as Bidfood. Bidvest Logistics and PCL Distribution fall under that banner, whilst Ontime Automotive and The Mansfield Group are now completely separated from them

Thanks Chris ! Its amazing the wealth of knowledge that these pics bring out on this thread.
