The Berliet is a TR 280 because the TR 260 had “trilex” front wheels. We could see that the Berliet badge is on the right side so it was the first version of this model.

Haha, I went back and put the TR260 bit in just before I posted, in case I was wrong, should have just left it as it was! Thanks for that Michel, now I know about the Trilex wheels, I won’t make that mistake again.

Les how the devil are you, trust you are enjoying a bit of retirement eh and this new thread takes us all back does it not, moved on now with the new machines as you need to be a computer buff as well as good on the spanners but I think we had the best days and laughs. Longo sat out side your work shop having just come of the ferry sitting in a deck chair with a glass of chilled white wine and simosa’s he bought early AM from the Indian shop round the corner to greet you when you arrived at 7 oclock, oh and not forgetting the cardboard flap window he fitted in Itally after someone smashed it when they broke in to the 111, Mary Hopkin’s moments there cheers JD.

Thanks for your input Buzzer

Thanks for your comment “thelongdrag”

cav551:
The Leyland Retriever also had the non reactive bogie linkage located inside the chassis rails. The front brakes also used a large C spring rather than individual brake shoe return coil springs. IIRC the front shoes had camshaft rollers. I never had occasion to remove the rear drums on a Retriever so do not know if they used cam rollers or the Leyland/Albion sliding pads with the wide cam. The O 600 engine was derated slightly in order not to exceed the torque limits of the AEC D 197 gearbox.

Edit: correct error.

Cheers “cav551” Thanks for the comprehensive answer, very impressive. But you have totally lost

F86

Hi all,
The little F86 tag axle 6x2 reminded me of of a issue some may find interesting.
Early 70’s overhang of a body could not exceed 30% of the trucks wheel base. Wheelbase “was” from centre line of the rear axle to centre line of the steer axle.
No problem, untill you lifted the tag axle (as in the picture) then you had, acording to the minestry, an illegal overhang.
So, the minestry said they would prosecute, court case set on some indevidual, Volvo uk took up the challenge.
Minestry said once the axle is off the ground it ceases to be an axle, (there case).
The letter of the law clearly stated measurements are from centre line of the rearmost axle to centre line of steer axle.
Now, you all remember the “classes” of HGV 1 2 & 3 so Volvo uk asked if a group 3 driver could drive a 6x2 (24 tonner) when the tag axle was up. (there case).
Result, wheelbase changed on multi axle trucks from ( WB ) wheel base, to (T W B) Theoretical wheel base.
If my fading memory still works that gave us centre line of Bogie + 8 inches.
The old memory brain cells kicked in when i saw the old F86 in this picture.
Cheers Paul, Dean, fantastic thread. Harvey

I don’t remember the Guy at all? Our vintage club secretary drove a four wheeled Big J for Waters but that ran solo and had a Leyland engine. His health was suffering through years of being away all week in digs and living on junk food so Waters gave him the Guy new so that he could have a ‘steady’ day and be home each night. His work for five days a week with it was run empty to South Elmsall to load at 7am for Newcastle upon Tyne, then back load from (I think) the Jarrow area to Gloworm at Milford (near Belper) where he had to tip before 3pm or the gates were locked. On Saturdays he usually ran empty to Bolsover and then loaded down to Leamington or Warwick. Doesn’t seem that steady to me? He now drives their ERF four wheeler (ex Knights Brothers of Rowsley) for shows!

Pete.
