A & J Butterworth Ltd were from the village of Greenfield in Saddleworth.
Their small yard was called Road End Garage just up the road from J.Barrett’s yard on Chew Valley Road in Greenfield.
They ran several vehicles and i remember that Leyland Marathon when it was brand new in 1978 collecting various loads of tyre cord at Tanner Brothers Mill in Greenfield where my late father in law worked.
They replaced that Marathon with a brand new Scania 111 around 1984
In 1999 they added this Leyland DAF four wheeler curtain-sider to their fleet.
Butterworth’s old garage was once an American Army Base Hut from World War One.
It was transported to Greenfield and erected in 1919, just after the war, where it stood the test of time until it was finally demolished on the 25th of March 2008.
This was Butterworth’s old fuel pump at Road End Garage on Chew Valley Road in Greenfield.
The company has long since gone but the fuel pump is actually still there today, as you can see here on Google Street View.
Hi Dean,Looks like Chiltern’s F88 is off on a family outing, lol. Regards Andrew.
He’s probably got the family dog in there as well !

Great pics Paul. I think they got there moneys worth out of the old army hut ! Love the pic of the fuel pump.
Reminds me of Ireland where you would go through a small village/town and there would be a fuel pump outide a
shop. Brilliant !

The ERF was owned by Rod Closs my dad worked with him in the early 60s at Midlands Storage
Rod went to Australia as a 10 pound “Pom”
Midlands Storage were owned by TDG and they had a lot of companies in Australia who Rod went to work for
On his return to Blighty some years later he set up on his own running up to 4 lorries
His main work was gypsum out of Gotham and East Leake
He sold up in the mid eighties and ran several different pubs in the Bulwell and Basford areas of Nottingham
