Hiya Dennis.

This lad makes a good point, I reckon there would be a market for a book, there is a lot of interest in nostalgic road transport.

You could release it locally for starters as a tester, all those pics you have, with a few anecdotes it would be a winner.
Nice to see you back on here btw, and Happy New year to ya .

Ah the best to you and yours Rob and I wish you a bosting Hogmanay and many o’ them for years ta come aye ! TBH Rob I really can’t be fashed about writing a book as that was years ago and it’s a bit like “that was then and this is now” plus I really do believe that whatever I might have to impart is from the last century and has no relevance to the current era. Kicking off with a D1000 up to running Scania 450 6x2’s and every twist and turn in between over thirty years ! Phew ! what an experience ! F —terrifying thinking back ! Cheers Dennis.

One thing that will never change, Dennis, is attitude and determination required to succeed and the harder I work, the luckier l get.
Success never dropped into anyone’s lap. I dips me lid to you.

Where the h ell have you been ?

I am ashamed to admit that I defected to Fatface! I discovered some old friends from my mis-spent youth - including some of the female persuasion - and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to reconnect with them. Some idiot has now hacked my facebook account and “frozen” it so I thought I would check on here and see how many are still upright and breathing! Don’t know how this is going to proceed as the nice person has now started sending out “dodgy” emails, supposedly from my computer. I’m going to spend a few hours trying to sort it! Nice to speak again- and a Very Happy New Year to you and anyone else who happens to read my drivel!

Nice to connect again, Oily! Replied to Brian a few minutes ago if you would like to have a look. Problems with the machinery so spending time today trying to sort it. Hopefully chat again soon, old pal.

Happy New Year to all from an old retired wagon driver living in the colonies but remembering the old golden days of British transport.

I give FB (assuming you mean that btw😄) a wide berth.
I’ll look at things of interest via my wife’s account, like the site dedicated to my old home town, or some transport stuff, other than that…No way Pedro.

I’ve seen lads create sh storms by opening up wounds from the past, and I really could not be arsed with it.
There are one or two people from my past which would not be a good move to be in touch with again, and as for old girlfriends and past ‘liasons’ ?.. :flushed:absolutely no kin way.:flushed:…what were you thinking man.:joy:

My youngest lad when about 18 had his account tampered, and it wasn’t good,.especially me maybe having trying to ‘sort it’ with the local ‘talent’ all much younger and fitter than me at the time.. but it all died a death in the end, and my lad is now like me, just leaves it.

Probably the best advice I’ve had lately! My old pals are a good crowd but when a stranger invades your computer it does make you wonder if it’s all worth it! Luckily, those I value all have my mobile number so if I fail to ressurrect the fatface account it won’t be the end of the world.

I probably won’t get the chance later so can I take this opportunity to wish everyone on here a great New Year.
I won’t single out those posters who keep this place running with the fabulous pics and wonderful stories and knowledge but everyone knows who they are. A big thanks to all of you and keep it up next year.

Both my wife and I get emails about how we’ve been caught watching ■■■■ and demanding monies or else they’ll disable our computer. I just wish the bassa’s would include the links to these websites.

We used to get half term hols at school, locally known as ‘tattie pickin week’.
12 to 14 year old lads getting picked up by farmer’s wife early on.
Get to farm,.a massive breakfast,. then out in fields, back in for massive dinner,.and I was really lucky…I got to drive the tractor and trailer,.which I loved.:sunglasses:
(:thinking:hmm a penny has just dropped )

Then take home ÂŁ5 a day cash for 5 days.
You felt like a millionaire.
Good days…but bloody hard work on yer back.

I grow quite a few potato varieties & I grew some Jersey spuds a few years ago, The seed spuds are sold as ‘International kidney’ as the Jersey name is protected.

They didn’t taste owt like Jersey spuds either, It must be the region/soil they’re grown in that gives them that great taste.

I’ve just ordered my seed spuds for delivery by the end of February.

Somewhere in the recesses of my addled brain is a dim memory of my Mum splashing out on Jersey new potatoes: it was a rare treat.

What happened to all those old varieties of spuds like King Edwards? Gone the same way as decent apples (I used to love russets) I suppose. Can you still get Bramley’s for baking?

You’re shopping in the wrong place parkroyal. King Edwards are available pretty well all year and I bought some Russetts yesterday (35p each), they are seasonal though.

Yes, the taste of the first early season jersey potatoes are fantastic. I grew King Edwards last year amongst other heritage varieties, in fact I’ve still got some left in boxes in the garage.
Pink Fir Apple is an old heritage variety of waxy potato I love too after Jersey potatoes. They don’t sell them in supermarkets because they seem to prefer quantity to quality. They are a knobbly tuber shape, but the taste is amazing with just butter & salt & pepper.

Yes russets are a favourite of mine too along with a good Cox orange pippin.

Bramley apples are still widely available. I’m growing some sweet potatoes for a change this year as we eat quite a lot of them, I’ve ordered the sweet potato Slips from a UK grower & they will be delivered at the end of April.

I’m trying to get some slips started from store bought sweet potatoes just to see if they’re viable, most store sweet potatoes are sprayed with a growth inhibitor to stop them sprouting, so I soaked them in water for 24 hours to wash it off before setting them in jars in clean water.
