Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

Is the Grey Funnel Spider Line Australian?

Oh so my Dad was wrong about merchant ships and the Red Ensign flying on the stern?

Tbf he has only sailed on the likes of Destroyers and Frigates, and later on Submarines, not commercial frieghters.

Hari Kari!

No. he was right, it was me that was confused.

@les_sylphides Ha ha saw what you did there, but for the benefit of those who don’t know, the Grey Funnel Line is what the Merchant Navy calls the Royal Navy.

And one for Bewick, as this lot’s already started and have no intention of stopping!

I love the way that series of pictures showed the advantage of pre tilt cab days when all access to the engine could be made from inside the relative comfort of the cab. :joy:

Earlier cabs were easier to keep clean too.
A plastic covered foam squab on a bit of angle iron frame was so much more practical than all this new fangled air suspension cloth and leather stuff of today.

I almost feel sorry for the poor bosses having to fork out for such luxuries for drivers!

This seller is rather ambiguous, it’s worth about $300 in scrap value.

My father-in-law had a Commer like that, it had a Holden 3 litre red motor transplanted into it, requiring two Commer radiators fitted in parallel.
His neighbor had similar, but he cut the middle section out of another van and welded it into the other, making a long wheelbase Commer camper.
Different times, nowadays you need engineering approval for most modifications.

That LHD 5MW-cabbed ERF ended up with Trans Arabia in Saudi (a subsidiary of S Jones). Here’s a pic:

Tell him he’s dreaming
