Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

The Scammell is a restoration job, took this photo at the Tyne Tees run in 2015. I think there was an article about it in one of the classic magazines a few years ago and it did reside in Yorkshire somewhere IIRC.

NMP so don’t know who to credit for it. Both roughly 240 bhp, both sleeper cabs and ready to go abroad which would you choose??

The one on the right, both with narrow bunks by today’s standards but the Atki (like mine at Econofreight for a time) with an engine hump which went from front to back of cab had, of necessity a folded one at elbow height, whereas the 88 with a shortened hump allowed space for the complete bunk to be set low down and, in the case of the 89 I drove for White Trux, no passenger seat which made it seem quite a spacious cab.

But I wouldn’t knock either back in preference to a day cab.

Would they be more recognisable if they had the Union Jack back on the grill again?

You’re a little rascal Patrick , don’t go upsetting those snp loonies any more than they already are .

Aye rigsby it’s about two thirds for the Union the other third when asked about a currency if Independence was voted for said " we’ll stick wi the Giro" . and SNP MSP Emma Harper when discussing currency said we can use plastic(credit/debit cards) we are in good hands NOT.

It might be just me but I think this design was so far ahead of its time it’s scary. That is one good looking tractor unit.

Tipped in there loads of times, as you say you’d never think that was the way in.

Exactly what I was thinking Buzzer, have to say I’ve never heard of them, guessing they’ve long gone now. Can’t imagine where their yard was in Twickenham.

Another one of Hargreaves.

I’ll take the Volvo thank you. It’s a Smith and Robinson motor, by this time S&R had been absorbed into The Hargreaves Group.

Thanks for the info. on the Scammell

We had just one Scammell (8 wheeler) at our Liversedge terminal, I enjoyed using it occasionally, and yes, it had the Scammell ‘gate change’.
