Here are some photos I took of the Atkinson at the Distington Vintage rally in 2009 when I seem to remember John drove it that day. The engine is a Gardner 4HLW.

I have never seen an Atkinson with an underslung engine before. Did that mean that it had a walk through cab then, perhaps with a bench seat for passengers? And why was it not more common, engine damage perhaps?

That’s the first thing that occurred to me. Pretty low for anything bar a nice smooth surface.

They were originally built for the brewery trade so as to enable a 3-man cab, the prototype being operated initially by Carlsberg. John Smith also ran some, one of which is preserved (click on the photo to go to the original source, which also includes a photo of the engine)

The preserved Stamper motor was one of a pair which ran on trade plates the Atkinson works fleet, hence the ■■■■■■■■■■ registrations. I do have a factory photo of one of them at work in its Atkinson days - all I need now is a working scanner!

Well Larry all I can say is that our Son is now probably the main Sign Writer and Maker in Kendal and since he started up on his own at the age of 19 ( over 30 years ago) he has produced and fitted numerous signs for Kendal Holy Trinity Parish Church and not ONCE has he charged a penny for his work ! So that gloating post of Punchy’s surely sums up the bloke ! The C of E needs all the help it can get currently without being taken advantage off by Chancers ! Sorry Mate but that’s how I feel and I would add that I do not attend Church very often but I certainly would not make a charge for any work I carried out for the local church unless I was an Atheist or a complete ■■■■ !   Cheers Dennis.

I stand by exactly what I have said so if the cap fits you have to wear it !! maybe I have touched a sore point ! well I still wouldn’t have charged The Church if I had sent a motor 100 miles or more but others have a different view ! :open_mouth: PS I suppose times have changed so it is a case of get what you can while you can regardless ! Areosols !

Religion bah humbug.
C of S and C of E and other faiths tend to give the impression of penury with a very large begging bowl prominent. Hard up…not en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propertie … %20revenue.

Would they be more recognisable if they had the Union Jack back on the grill again?

Us doing large quantities of work for customers involved with church buildings & restoration projects is a bit different to your lad printing of stickers saying pick up dog ■■■ at the local chapel ,I reckon my kids can do that on the office printer

Your post isn’t worthy of comment Dan’l as you haven’t got a clue as to either the type or quality of our Son’s work !

I don’t know where the Hargreaves Scammell lived, it certainly wasn’t at our Liversedge terminal (and I was there from the start to the finish). It’s dressed up in our livery, has anybody any more info. on it?
