Old style paper tacho question

Do they add a couple of minutes driving time for a shunt?

Not if your going slow enough for the needle not to show a trace, otherwise it will show up.
Or just rip it up and do a manual (legal) one, ahhh the good old days.

I’ve got one, wish it was digi tbh as on Friday circumstances meant I was close to 4 1/2 hours before I got a break in. Tbh not sure if I went over because nobody’s shown me how to read them.

You’ve got to be joking!

Nope, only got the truck last week and been doing long days so not had time to look into it til now, and not had any joy finding out what I want to know I.e where breaks show up. Sorry if this sounds bad.

Well charts have been old hat now from around nine years. If hes only driven digi and gets thrown on an analogue, hows he to know? Been a while since I have seen one. Fairly easy though.

Have a look at the back of the chart, shows you most of it.

who showed you how to read the beano and dandy? can you not ask them to help?

I can see a few “incorrect use of the mode switch” infringements in that pic

Got it worked out, looks like I was on about 4hrs 25-30mins driving before I got my break in. Are VOSA normal alright about 5 mins over if that does happen on an analogue cos it’s harder to be accurate with times?

You need one of these.

VOSA don’t like you to run over your times but they can make allowances if the VOSA man sees fit too. One minute over and he has every right to fine you. Not saying they would but they could.

I judged I’d got roughly 45 mins driving time left then my boss tells me to “nip into” … to make a drop. Told him I was worried about my time but it was only 20 mins away. Anyway gets there and it’s on an old industrial estate with cars parked everywhere and had to jack it into a unit. Was a bloody nightmare so ended up shunting about for ages with no option of getting a break in there. Got out of the estate and pulled up for break straight away after.

It’s not like he can press a button and find out how much driving he has done ‘to the minute’ is it :unamused: . My Scania is still on a disc (54 plate) and when on a longer run (not now!), I found the best thing was to make a note of the times you booked on at work (SOD line on disc,to keep an eye on the 6hr crud) driving started/finished, breaks/POA etc and you should be ok…as long as you can do some simple sums, alls good

Twice I have been stopped and both time they were OK. A couple of minor things but the said they werent worried about them.

IMO, people stress out too much about VOSA/DVSA or whatever you wanna call em. If your running legal then you dont have a problem. If you have messed up a couple of times do a printout or write out on the back of an analogue chart, keep them for the correct time and you should be ok.

You should only worry if your running bent or for a grey or red company.

A mistake is a mistake, dont try and hide it.

If I’m heading into a busy area i’ll have a break before I go in. I’ve had too many twitchy bum times clock watching whilst stuck in traffic. Since you put it straight on break as soon as you could should stand you in good stead if you do get stopped. All you can do is be honest, the VOSA man might let it slide. If you try and hide it though I’d imagine he’d start digging.

I do try my best mate, and do secure every load I take on the road. Should I write on the back “unforeseen need to shunt at end of drive time due to parked cars at ”?
