Old style paper tacho question

I drive for a red and i still don’t worry as much as some people on here. I think the ones who stress the most have never even been pulled over.

If you are running to the letter of the law then you have nothing to fear.

I think last time i was pulled over i had 3 infringements but they decided as they were older then 3mths they would get over it. They are not all mini Hitler’s. The last women even came out with a joke about checking my nuts so clearly friendly banter works.

Twice I have been stopped and both time they were OK. A couple of minor things but the said they werent worried about them.

IMO, people stress out too much about VOSA/DVSA or whatever you wanna call em. If your running legal then you dont have a problem. If you have messed up a couple of times do a printout or write out on the back of an analogue chart, keep them for the correct time and you should be ok.

You should only worry if your running bent or for a grey or red company.

A mistake is a mistake, dont try and hide it.

I do try my best mate, and do secure every load I take on the road. Should I write on the back “unforeseen need to shunt at end of drive time due to parked cars at ”?

I wouldnt worry about it. If your running close to your time then your boss should be looking at rearranging the runs to allow a bit of leeway.

If there was something unforeseen during the day then when your finished you could write on the back something along the lines of “accident on A1, 30 min delay” “unknown roadworks A14”. Just dont lie and you cannot count roadworks that have been there for a while that you/your planner should have known about.

A manual entry on a chart is exactly the same process and taking a printout and writing on the back.

Something like getting caught in the Tollbar roadworks might not slide but getting caught in the Tollbar roadworks because of those 3 HGV’s crashing on the A46 closing the carriage way causing chaos for all then that would be OK. I know, I was stuck in that jam :imp:

You’ve got to be joking!

It’s not like he can press a button and find out how much driving he has done ‘to the minute’ is it :unamused: . My Scania is still on a disc (54 plate) and when on a longer run (not now!), I found the best thing was to make a note of the times you booked on at work (SOD line on disc,to keep an eye on the 6hr crud) driving started/finished, breaks/POA etc and you should be ok…as long as you can do some simple sums, alls good

Just for this reason I use the truck timer app in my wagon with an anologe tacho, seen me good, best couple of quid I have ever spent

My ERF is also on analogue. I downloaded an app for my iPhone which records hours and breaks etc. You have to remember to switch it between modes but it works well as a “at a glance” device. Wouldn’t rely on it 100% but it’s good enough. Look for “Renault Trucks time book” on the app store.

Cheers mate, I will. Don’t want to be on receiving end of lots of :unamused: 's but you know the working time directive, what’s the limit for other work and driving before you get 45 minutes in? I thought it was 9 hours, but not 100%. Here I read it as that…

The paper drivers record, the tacho disc, superb in these modern times.Been stopped several times in France and once in the UK in the last year and
handing over a pile of tacho discs their face is a picture, they just can’t be bothered to engage brain, shuffle them about and hand them back with a
look of disgust on their face. You can take your digi and shove it.Tacho discs rule!!!

Tris, pop down to your local supermarket or Argos, browse through the kitchen section and buy a digital timer for around the 6 quid mark. Stick it in a visible spot on the dashboard and start/stop it as required. Instant readout of driving time.

Maximum 6 hours work (driving and other work) and you need a minimum of 15 minutes break before exceeding that. That’s not just the first 6 hours work of the shift, you must never exceed 6 hours work without a break in the shift.

Next break would be required at another 6 hours of work from the end if the last break or before the end of the shift, whichever comes first.

If your shift has between 6 and 9 hours of work you will need a total of at least 30 minutes break, can be one long break or two periods of at least 15 minutes each.

If you shift has more than 9 hours work in it then you need a total of at least 45 minutes. This can be imade up of one, two or three breaks as long as each one is a minimum of 15 minutes.

Not a single mention of driving time in all that lot!
Three 15 min breaks err.

Three 15 min breaks would be fine if you worked more than nine hours and didn’t exceed 4h30 driving.

He wasn’t asking about driving time was he? He was asking about WTD breaks and how much work before a break was required, so the answer provided that information and work is both driving time and other work. Obviously reaching 4.5 hours driving time would trigger a break but he wasn’t asking about that.

Nothing wrong with 3x15-minute breaks for the WTD Regulations, perfectly legal, which once again as you seemed to miss that glaringly obvious point is what the question was about. :unamused: :unamused:
