Old northamptonshire companys

Hi all you Northants haulage co fans. Indeed this thread is in my back yard. Looks like ill have a busy few days now sifting through the old collection diggin out all the firms.

As a memory: The ABBA F88 was indeed on hire from Harbourne (owned by Tim Harrison). There were 3 of them and they were originally used on the ABBA UK tour (obviously). If anyone has a photo, check out the front bumper and you’ll see the Harbourne logo as opposed to the F88s cross hired in from Dawsons which didnt have anything. I wrote to Harbourne for some piccys and they sent me a HUGE poster showing ABBA standing infront of the F88… Hidnsight is a wonderful thing…WHY O WHY O BLOODY WHY did I throw it away? :unamused:

ABC Dee - American Express was CB name of my mate Vince Cobley. Dee was a farmer from Desborough who ran only 2 trucks, the F12 and an 8 wheeler F7. Previous to that he had an 8 wheeler F86. I used to ride with Vince when I wasnt bonking his baby sitter Tracey
Are you out there Vince? I lost touch mate.

I’ll do my best to get some pics on here soon  ASH

Hi Truckerash , bet you know “harty” (john hartgroves) who drove for micky bennett - worked @ airflow with him , last see him in the wheelhouse dover when he’d just got an F12 . I was just starting out on euro work for Paul Binns (remember him) with a puddlejumper    :grimacing:

On M ■■■■, I was informed he pack in when Blackwoodhodge closed down, because they was his main supplier of work.

Yep, i know Harty. Lost touch with him years ago but still in touch with 1 or 2 rogers drivers who still see him around. Very sad to hear that ‘Big Ben’ Mick Bennett died some time ago now  He was a real nice guy.
Got some pics of Ben’s motors, ill post um up.
I know Paul Binny too. Don’t want to embarrass him, but when he a ‘kid’ he worked for my dad most days on his milkround  :unamused: ASH

You are correct Norman, but it wasn’t JUST the closure that finished Mike ■■■■…the ministry had something to do with it as well, ay,ay,nudge, nudge   say na more!
I’ll put some pics up asap (Mike ■■■■, not the ministry). ASH

Could have something to do with the fact they did Northampton to Motherwell and back in just under 2 days

Does anyone remember ADT transport ? they were just as bad … we called them ‘AFTER DARK TRANSPORT’

Ummmm, I know, I did some work for him :smiling_imp: I drove a Bedfor TM (narrow cab) 4 wheeler, 10 tonner and it went like a rocket. Then I found top gear and I thought I was going to take off. Frightening! Tacho wasnt calibrated either …whatever that meant

Anyone on here remember a small company, when on Brs on contract to Camping Gaz at Sywell there was a drive of the name Arthur French, and he told me his brother used to run a few lorries, I personally had never heard of them or seen them, maybe you lads know, 1972 when he told me.

Yes I remember them all, Green Shield used to have a depot at High Wycombe, also there was a stamp company before " Pink stamps", do you remember them.

Golden Wonder also operated out of a bigger plant on the Earlstree est in Corby.

As usual I’m late catching with local threads, when I was pulling IFF 30’ dual purpose boxes we had to use Harris’s to turn the box round after tipping bulk, the boxes had a small hatch at the front of the box and doors at the back, Harris’s had an old mobile crane the belched out so much smoke it was hard to tell if the box was there at all. HSE would have a fit now seeing a bloke shin up on top of a container to hook the chains on, staying on top whilst it’s turned.

I didn’t see a mention of John Billows, before becoming a Volvo agent he ran tippers and skip motors, there is an article in a CM mag from the 60s showing a Seddon 13:4 in his livery.

Correct there Skandi. John Billows started off with a tractor shovel (like a JCB) and then some Seddon tippers doing earth shifting. He then took on one of the first Volvo dealerships in the country, running a fleet of F86 tippers 4&6 wheelers on the plant side. He was then , as far as I can remember, the first in the area to move into skip hire. He then introduced what he named ’ the alligator’ an 8wh F86 compactor that could uplift about 8 skipfuls before having to tip. Billows skips were everywhere in the area. The big fortune maker was the dealership as Volvos sold like hot cakes. The plant side just sort of ended and the skip business was sold to Shanks & Mc Ewan who continued to operate it from Billows yard. Sadly John died before it reached its peak. Volvo now own it, but whatever they call it the locals still call it Billows.
