Old northamptonshire companys

Deisel dan, I got the info on JTPadbury, the reason it closed down, was the Animal Right People, they was causing problems with sabotage, it also happened to Challice who was taken over by Butts. Arson on their wagons by ARP was the final straw, but had been a long campaign against them from the 70’s into the 80’s almost.

Hi Norman
Do you by any chance have any pics of any of JT Padburys kit?
Thanks

No mate, when I use to see them, I only had a brownie camera in the 60’s and never had it with me, but they used to take good black and white photo’s, took some on holiday when camping, but no lorries.

roadcommander2:
You are right Colin, A.B.C Dee were farmers from Desborough, I think.
Were loyal Volvo users.

Cheers
Mark

you are right about the volvos till they got a scania 112 on an E plate the full reg will come to me later, which then ended up on davella transport along with the trailer, then they carried on with just the farm, vince sones used to drive the artic and harry simpson the 8 legger, he worked for royal blue years ago, last i knew vince was working with land rovers and had a regular article in one of the 4x4 mags, harry went onto david pack out of cranford then to fermac but i lost touch since i moved to canada 6 yrs ago, w.a.sales thats tony sales used to pull out of chettles, i remember when i was i kid in the early 70s before tony had his own motors he smashed up one of the scammells that my old man used to drive reg 660 VMA, i last saw him on flour tanks out of finedon mills in wellingborough, i used to use his wrecker at times when i needed it. there are some good books if you can find a copy called on the move and on the move again vol 2 a history of transport in northamptonshire.
does anyone remember winslow transport from finedon? went on to become winslow-abbott then david abbott as i’m sure you will have heard of or worked for.
corby frieght, they had something to do with knights of old, we had a leyland buffalo off them UFP 316X and used to pull flats out of bsc corby, nigel lawman from finedon used to drive it for us then i had it after him, taught me most of what i know ( he worked for winslow years ago) now he is on lawmans buses out of kettering. theres a little bit of history to some of the names,. steve

diesel dan:
hi,when growing up as kids in wellingborough we didnt have a back garden with a lawn and flowers like normal people, our garden was full of o a edens coal lorries and the front garden had the fuel pump in it.(the fuel pump is still there after seventy years.)does anyone remember those lorries? a few more northamptonshire companys from the past.

cheers diesel

hey i remember edens! used to load coal off the trains at w’boro station, my first job when i left school ( and when i was suposed to be in school) !!! was on the coal for dave and tony barley ( queensway fuels) they taught me how to drink! poor dave passed on a few months back. hansons i remember well ( the scammell i mentioned earlier which is now on the rally scene was in there colours two toned blue ) had a lot to do with chettles, as to lilleys i ended up with the old erf of theres reg RRP 375G which is also in preservation, how about restrail from addington! or neville charles a welshman he pulled fridges out of chettles at wymington or any of the chettles drivers. steve

hi steve.
the only driver i knew on chettles was MAGGOT only knew his cb handle .we were in the layby tea shop on the a45 nr billing one night when maggot pulls up gets into his skip and comes out with this bigbone and procedes to knor the meat off it .put us off our breakfast i can tell you.i used to work with tony sales in united carriers garage ,great bloke but mad as a hatter.do you remember ■■■■ hull who pulled for chettles, chick crossley and the hornigould brothers who had f12 blood tankers.how about john brown from finedon he had some cattle trucks,(thames traders).
cheers diesel

Good to see a few of these companies getting an airing on here.
Glad you remember Ferresand, Diesel Dan, I was beginning to think I had imagined them as nobody else seemed to remember!

The “On the Move” series of books are excellent reminders of the local scene. I have got 3 of them, dont think they have done any more.

Interesting to see Chettles coming up, who could forget the stink from the works and the wagons!

WA Sales were in there with DAFs and a couple of Volvos, I assume they have packed up now, is that right?
Davella were also there with their DAFs, they also had a Renault and a couple of ERFs later on but I think that was after they finished with Chettles. I remember their Scania, didnt realise it was ex Dee’s.

Chick Crossley was also in there with DAF rigid skips in the main… have they packed up as well?

Also remember DH Transport (Dave Haggerwood)? with an old Leyland and again DAFs supplied by RB or Peter Brown DAF.

Hornigolds has a couple of smart green F12 Volvos on the blood, seems like they are a much bigger company now!!

Do you remember Wymington Commercials with their yellow & black KM Bedford skips that also ran out of Chettles?
You cant believe all that stuff was carted around in open skips, what would the HSE, Enviroment Agency make of it now?

What happened to Tony Sales pair of ERF wreckers?

Cheers
Mark

hi mark.
yes hornigolds have grown, i think they are part of one of the pallet networks now , they are based in the old chettles yard at ditchford.tony sales packed up, last time i saw him he was driving a flour tanker. i think spriggs have one of his old erf wreckers.
i remember going to wymington commercials garage one night and as i entered i could hear a lot of banging but couldnt see anyone, so i shouted HELLOOOO,and then a head popped out of one of those blood tanks that was fitted under the trailers, the fitter was covered in all this slimy blood and it didnt bother him :exclamation: chettle drivers and fitters were made of more sterner stuff than me.i drove by chettles about an hour ago and the stink still takes your breath away, and there are only empty trailers there now. :open_mouth:

we used to have some good times at chetts and as you say tony is a good bloke, yes i know ■■■■ hull, last i know he had his own motor pulling out of corby flour mills but had a place in florida and was talking of moving there but not sure, chick i know very well also dave ( buck ) mitchell ( davella ) is a very good friend of mine and we keep in touch. merv and brian hornigold them too, and john ( brunner ) brown i used to drink with every weekend before moving here and still keep in touch he carried on the cattle tucks after his dad then went to padburys then on to a cement mixer, now he is on agency. steve

diesel dan/ roadcommander, did’nt ferresand run grey dodges with red lettering? and as for billows they used to have seddon tippers on demolition work ( we ended up with one ) then they went to volvo, as for w.g eales did you know alan ( ginger ) johnson or curly farley they worked in the garage and have both passed on since, or did you know my old man, ben owen? from finedon, could sit on here all night with names from the past.
roadcommander did you used to drive one? could find you one out here in the bushes! lots of old stuff still around out this way.
heres another name, tweedy donaldson, you must know him!!
steve

ref eales transport.
hi steve.cor blimey ,you have brought back memories there. i worked in wg eales garage in the mid sixtys.johny brown was a driver there, he had a 3 ton d series ford.ginger johnson was my best mate from about ten to when he sadly died.how about.graham(bowie) coles.another good bloke i used hang around with, and tweedy donaldson, johnny richardson, beardy warner, we were all bikers those days and used to hang around on that layby opposite the gladstone pub.curly fardon was a driver when i was at eales it was he who taught me to drive the foden twelve speed.i know your dads name, did he work for brookside.

Are we talking about Alan 'ginger ’ Johnson from Cottingham (when he died). If so I remember him driving a Marathon for Corby Freight, got upset when some young man had it and smashed it up whilst he was on holiday. I know he also worked for Crouch’s recovery Rigid Containers and I think I last saw him driving for Seddons Packaging in Kettering before he died. He had an enormous archive of transport photos and stuff.

hi classicman,
yes that is the one and same ginger johnson,we grew up together, and in work life worked at the same companies most of the time.after he moved to cottingham we lost touch , and sadly he died suddenly. if you have a copy of ON THE MOVE there is a pict of him sitting on the step of of his long nose trader at eales. i think a lot of the pict in that book were his.
cheers diesel.

hi,

i bet you couldnt wait to get to work to drive one of these beasts  these belonged to wg eales and were working in the quarry at rushton near kettering early sixties, these fords were replaced by a new fleet of foden dumpers, i bet the drivers thought they had died and gone to heaven when they were given them
cheers diesel

hi,
just for plastic bag,a real wilkinson lorry :exclamation:

Steve. There was a chap lived near me worked on Chettles for years. I think it was for Dave Haggerwood, and he used to do nights up tp Doncaster. I think he then had his own motor. Dave Gavin was his name, but I think he has retired and moved away now.

Diesel, you put a lot of Wilkinsons pics up, did you ever meet Brian Orsborn who worked for them. I knew him from when I was little and his family ran Orsborns lorries and buses in Kettering. I later met him again up at Bibbys on the Boots job at Wellingboro’ when I worked there for a few months.

yes i know both of them, if i remember right dave gavin worked for a few of them down at chetts, sort of switching about.

small world aye, heres me working on trucks in canada and talking about all the old guys we know! as for my dad he never worked at brookside, he was at chettles in the early 60’s to early 70’s driving everything and anything, could write a book on the stories from there, one i remember was at wymington garage where they also had a slaughter house round back, in the field next to there they used to have some horse and one died! so the boss aked my dad to go and fetch it in but the truck which was used for that kind of work was out so my dad used the wrecker !!! tied a chain round the horses neck and winched it up, later that day there was a visit from the police and rspca, someone phoned them saying chettles were now hanging the animals to slaughter them!!!( then we ended up there back in the 80’s with his own trucks till he died in 98 ) in between he worked at E ward at the tractor and truck garage driving the low loader and matador wrecker, ginge went there after eales then onto wilkinson as i’m sure you know, only it was townsend carriers then, bet you know mick austin too? back to my dad during that time he kept the prince of wales at finedon from 69 to 78. then he set up with his brother in law gary donaldson ( tweedys brother ) doing steel castings they had the old buidings in dulleys yard where the new court house is now , do you remember seeing the trucks parked there, buffaloes, roadtrain, then mercs. we used to sub for n.d.e and eales then pulled bulkers for varneys, david pack, keneth wilson, then when they pulled the site down we moved to wymington garage and got in with chettles again, by this time the partnership with gary had finished. funny you mentioned the gladstone i was president there for a few years and gladstone is the name of the town where i live now. graham coles i don’t think i know ( i know coke and mick coles ) also fred coles and his brother melvin. tweedy as i metioned is a good mate of mine ( he came out here and stayed with us a couple of years ago with his sister wendy )john richardson that would be rays brother right ? the same ray who married tweeds sister wendy? beardy warner i don’t know, but you must have known seppie who got killed on a bike? some other names i bet you know are bob summerley, del walters, shady andrews, pete donaldson? going on a bit here so i will catch you later, some good memories though. lets keep them going.steve

hi steve,
i bet i knew your dad through tony sales as we would go up chetts wymington garage quite alot in the mid to late sixtys. i remember the eppisode with the horse ,didnt a guy called oddie have something to do with it too. do you remember when they had a dead monkey up chetts, and some wag put it in a lorry cab and tied it to the door handle, when the poor driver came in the morning all bleary eyed and snatched open the door the monkey shot out the door on top of him,he just about had a heart attack.then the monkey was put in someones sidecar where it went undiscovered for two weeks, i think the smell gave it away.
i knew shady very well,a rather apt name,he and fred coles used to drive for whitworths when i worked in their garage.didnt del walters have that yanky ford unit .bowie coles was ginners brotherinlaw, he drove for eales from when he left school to when they packed up,another name for you, graham chamberlin, lived on that track from the round house to burton. its been forty years since i left finedon and with old age i remember names but not faces.i was known as plug those days, cheers diesel
