roadcommander2:
Diesel Dan, do you have any pics of the Abba F88?Ive enjoyed seeing your United Carriers pics on that thread, used to see em everyday once, along with Wilkinson Transport and Atlas Express.
Cheers
Mark
The only picture of the ABBA Volvo that I’ve seen in existence is an old press release one a copy of which can be seen in the scrapbook memories thread. Don’t know what page though.
Diesel Dan I remember those Foden dumptrucks driving through Kettering to and from the iron ore quarries. There is a Foden publicity photo in existence of 8 of them lined up in Wellingborough. If you have a copy of ‘On The Move’ it is on p132.
ref plastic bag.
you cheeky young pup, that pict of paragreens lorry was taken in 1947 i took the pict, and i was,nt older than 20 the only fed ex pict i have at the moment is this one you might reconise it
ref foden dumpers
hi classicman, those fodens were left at rushton from monday till friday midday and then we would all whoosh off to the cresta cafe at finedon, last one bought the teas.(they did sound great did,nt they) then back to the yard and wash down and service sat mornings.after aweek carrying iron ore. a lot of ore used to get compacted in the bottom of the body, and the only way to get it out was with a pick axe which was bloody hard work.so one of the more enterprising drivers obtained a little bit of explosive from the quarry bore a few holes in the compacted ore and laid his charges lit the fuses and stood back with his fingers in his ears.boom the bottom of the body opened like a tin can,oh how we laughed but then we had to make repairs before the boss found out. them fodens were sure tough.
i have a copy of that foden line up. it was taken in the old preads brewery site in sheep street wellingborough about6
cheers diesel.
Thanks for the Wilkinson pic Diesel Dan.
Its suprising that there arent more pics of them about, they used to have a big fleet of D series box vans at Higham and I seem to remember the Seddon Atki trunkers didnt used to hang about!!!
Do you remember a tipper firm called Ferresand from Higham, used to run 4 wheel Dodge tippers at one time.
Yes, the White Road Commanders do tend to kick you in the back a bit.
Cheers
Mark
Hi Diesel Dan The Cresta Service Station and Cafe, thats a blast from the past. Owned I believe by Hugh(?) Porter who in later years did classic car rallying with Derek Jones. How about New Street Motors NSM the parcel company that operated out of the premises at rear of the Cresta. They ran an oddly assorted collection of lorries in a pale blue livery on express parcels.
hi classicman.
i only remember new street motors being based at new street in irthlingborough.owned by don jackson(the original diesel dan) atlas express were behind the cresta cafe.do you remember cresta being the main dodge agents, hugh porter moved on and opened a garage in thrapston, cheers ,diesel.
ref roadcommander2.
hi mark, yes i remember ferresand didnt they have some foden eight wheelers as well as the dodges.heres another one for you,a tipper company based opposite ferresands, conways, they ran a smart fleet of aec marshall tippers. and braybrooks based just around the corner.
what is your connection with a roadcommander2.

Where did you get that you old tart ? That was taken in the A43 layby cafe on my way to British Lorry driver of the year contest (came 15th out of 100 … not too bad)
Those were the days … Best job I ever had over there.
ref plastic bag.
hi pat,you sent me that photo when i lived in the states,it must have been a really really good job to be better than your job on swifts, boy we had some laughs those days didnt we .
cheers diesel.
I remeber how myself and Hopscotch got away with murder on that job … I remember running down to Swindon one morning and catching you on the CB as you were comming back from your Robert Horne run. I turned around at the A420 turn and ran back about 20 miles with you just for a chat … I remember you said “You just dont give a f**K do you”
I dodnt bacause it seemed what ever I told Fed Ex they believed
I remember having a tues delivery in Glasgow on christmas week and Hop Scotch having one on the weds. We told the manager at fed ex we would be running together … “But you are a day apart delivering” he said.
“It’s christmas and if you want the loads delivering we run together or they dont go anywhere”
“Ok” he said “He can go a day early”
Not only did he run a day early, it took us 2 days to get fron Rugby to Glasgow and 2 days back but we conned the Glasgow company into unloading him a day early too. On the way back we were so slow we had nights out at Penrith and Wolverhampton and a christmas shopping spree in Carslile I think we arevaged abou 10 mph
Another time we both had deliveries at Toys are us in Coventry which was 20 mins from our depot, we went in early and delivered both the morning loads, the nipped back and got the afternoon loads and talked them into taking them too … at 9.00am
We then spent a few hours in a cinema and then the afternoon sleeping in rugby truck stop … when we drove into the yard at 5.00pm the boss said “Well done lads, good day”

Deisel Dan, you was on there after he left, as for Atlas they had a depot in Bailiffe street, I went for a job 1958/59 and they gave me such a lot of codswallope, I said do not bother and walked out.
