Right Larry, how long would it take you to handball this load out if the tipper was bust ?

Lets get back to paper Dennis!!!

Here’s one for you Vic !! A load of paper tipped on it’s side on the car park in Ambleside. It was on a 26ft single axle Boden trailer we had recently aquired,at that time, along with it’s mate and 5 tandem axled trailers fro Henry Cookes mill. One of it’s landing legs had sunk into an old drain and it cowped ower like!!! I was that ■■■■■■■ mad I sent both these poxy trailers to Yorks at Warrington and had one stretched and used the two axles to make a tandem bogie! Cheers Dennis.

Thanks Larry, Yes Tyne Improvement Commissioners Quay (TIC) I most certainly did work on some of the components, I remember seeing the customer name on the drawings a location I had been familiar with for a good few years before then. In my later haulage life I had plenty of arguments and strife along with my mate from Ireby with those nice friendly awkward guys who manned the dock shed there, its a wonder we both did not get banned. (wishfull thinking) Cheers Leyland 600.

hiya,
Spending a bit of time in the North East Dennis you are very very welcome
just make sure your passport is in order, or are you claiming asylum using
Grandfather rights.
thanks harry long retired.

'fraid not “H” the family claimed political asylum in ■■■■■■■■■■ when I was about 6 months old in 1947,far better side of the country this “H”,they don’t kill the first born or stone adulterers either,so speaking of adulterers how come you moved over the Pennines in the opposite direction ,so to speak !!! Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Nothing ulterior about my move to the North East from the North West Dennis
but I do like this part of the world and have been here around forty years and
wouldn’t want to move anywhere else now, only have one relative left in Lancs
a brother in Bacup who I pop over to see a couple of times a year have a sister
in Truro and another sister in Australia and I think that’s a bit far for the " old
man" to venture now, would be nice to be able to do the adultery thing though
but I don’t think my “old lady” would approve, going to have a very large single
malt before bed so cheers Dennis and sleep well.
thanks harry, long retired.

the older fleet

Anyone remember Jonny Edgar Transport from Alnwick, he ran some tippers out of Littlehoughton Quarry at Howick near Alnwick, His brother Raymond worked with him, they also used to do Spratts from Union Quay at North Shields in the 70s, He also did some Coninental work later on with his Scania Artic, any photos about ? Regards Larry.

Nice one thank you Is Jonny still about ? I havnt seen him for a very long time, A real nice lad to know, Regards Larry.

Hello Larry, yes he`s still about but i think he splits his time between Spain and over here. When he was over here he used to stop in a farm cottage near where i live in Longhoughton, many years ago he used to haul concrete pipes out of Littlehoughton with my Father then he went on to tippers and he used to do the continental work with his own unit, first a Scania 141 then a Volvo f12 Globetrotter, then he just sold up and semi retired. I think he used to do,or still does, the odd run over the water for Katem. He used to have a right reputation for a good lay on, and wasnt put off by the size of his opponent. He is now a lot mellower and a good crack. He had a driver called Jimmy Hall from Alnwick who originally drove for my Father and now works for Richard Aynsley driving his eight wheeler, Jimmy is also a good crack and i think is nearing retirement.
Steve

Aye I remember Jimmy, He often has a bit crack to David Lowdon, he does a bit for Richard at Berwick Docks, There was also Willy Bray worked for him & then Micheal Robson from Craster along with another lad they both drove Fodens I used to load sand off Cresswell Beach in those good old days, The other driver was called Mitford they used to doe Leechs work If my memmorey is right, Regards Larry.

Yes Larry, youve a good memory, Willie Mitford drove for Willie Robson of Craster, locally Known as white Robson as blue Robson were also from Craster. Sadly Willie Mitford died a couple of year ago, i think he drove for Robson most of his working life, then upto his death worked for blue Robson in and around the kipper sheds. I think he married a Robson so was kinda related to all the Robsons of Craster. Do you remember blue Robson, or given their correct name L Robson & Sons, they had a lot of four and six wheel flats many years ago on the pipes and more recently until they finished they had a four wheel tipper driven by the late Peter Greenley and a lovely Volvo F12 artic that hauled pipes driven by my good friend Hughie Baird, he had worked for them all his driving life then when they packed the wagons in left accrimoniuosly. He ended up working for Fergies upto retirement a couple of year ago, i had many happy days running with Hughie on the pipes and trying to beat him to tip first, happy days.
Also there was W.Pringle of Christon Bank, now Jeffreys. They were also on the pipes and had some right characters, all good lads.
Steve.

The number of times i past Christon banks on the old A1 is not beleavable,6 nights a week for long time working for Tayforth in the old days .Regards Vic.

Aye, I remember Hughie, he was pulling for Marsdens when I first met him canny bloke to work with, also Pringles lads a good crowd to, I used to see them at Scunthorpe when I used to go into A/Fs for slag in bags to take to farms for rip tips into the spreaders, mucky bloody job that was,but they were happy days in my book, Regards Larry.

The good old days

Would I be right in saying there was a lad worked in the weighbridge called Clive ? at the quarry, Regards Larry.

Aye Clive Douglas was a distant relation to us, he used to drive a ford D series for the pipeworks then went over to the Quarry, also in the weighbridge was my Grandfather Willie Foreman. He had tipper wagons then when my Dad came back from national service he got a flat for pipes, eventually he had two tippers and two flats, my Dad took the flats over in 1974 then went down to one until i came in in 1990. My granda died in 1996 and Clive passed away a few year ago.Ive got some old photos but i`ll have to get the scanner rigged up,when i can find the instructions!!!.
