H.Nichol Gateshead. This was taken when the Tall Ships Race came to the river first time round 1980s I think.
I shot this pic from a picture on the wall at AS Tyres so the quality isn’t so good. It was given to Alan Symm
by H Nichol so the copyright is his. Ps I hope Alan is going to get some more shots from “H” so that I can
reproduce them on TNUK (withhis permission of course) regards kevmac 47.0

Can any of old drivers remember J,Jennings Gateshead, Red wagons, I new some of the drivers, Albert Morrison, Jock McNiel, Tommy Grey, Little Joe. Im sure Bobby Brown was there too, as well as Crows Transport, they did a lot of pig iron from A/Ws, In fact I once did a load for them when I worked for Baxters, it was for Gardners at Paticroft, there was a big foreign bloke tipped you, while you had your breakfast in the canteen, & all it cost you was 10 Ciggies for him. Happy Days, Larry

Larry, I think Tommy Grey finished his working days at Tyneside Safety Glass, Don’t know if he is still with us.
He had the loudest deepest voice i’ve ever heard more so when he’d had a bottle or two of the “BrownDog”.
regards Kev.

Aye Kev, your right, you could here him before you could see him, the last time I saw him , was in the pub near Stanleys scrap yard where Adams lads called in before they went home, he was driving a tipper for someone, but thats about 11 years ago. I remember when he was at Jennings, we were coming from Manchester & stopped at Annies Cafe at Diggle, he had a puncture, & he rang the tyre people & they refused to come out, so I lent him my spare. When I called at their depot to get it back, Jennings asked why I had lent it to him, so I said hes a pal of mine, & the tyre people refused to come out to him, he went off it & demanded to know why they refused him , so I said just give me my spare back & ask the [zb] tyre your bloody self, thats the thanks I got for the favour Eh nowt funnier that folk . Tommy was furious when I told him, The dodgey old days. Regards Larry

These ERFs, Reg 1938, Belonged to my great uncle Isaac Smiles, They had walking floors, Worked manualy with a handle, The were rubber, as you can see on the front of the headboard, the one at the rear of the body was under the floor, Does anyone know where West Tyne Gravel Co was located ? I was once told that it was Acomb, ?. These wagons were taken for the war effort, & were seen in France, one of Smiles sons drove one of them himself, great history . It would be nice if someone could shed some light on this matter, Regards Larry

Still no replies as to where West Tyne Gravel was located, I thought perhaps some oldies may have heard something, I reallise there wont be anyone about that worked there, but Smiles for Miles was a big concern in their day,Old Isaac was a genius when it came to haulage, he had one of the finest fleets of wagons you could wish for, from day one., Have a good look at these ERFs. How much money is standing on rubber ?. a lot I would say. Im proud to have had him as a great uncle. Regards Larry.

Found a couple of pics of my first truck at Brian Olds,
