Lawrence Dunbar:
Another old firm comes to mind Andeas Gilberg fish hauliers from North Shields, they ran a lot of Albion Chieftans, green livery very smart in their day. any photos about, from the 50/60s. Also Burgess Transport fish hauliers, ran 8wheelers.Regards Larry

My old pal John Hook worked for Burgess on the fish. I worked with him several times over the years,
I wonder where he is now? I have never seen anybody drink whisky the way he did and still stand up!!

10237654Here is a North East family firm which has scaled down now but still has one wagon running - McKenna’s of Bardon Mill.

Nice photos Kevin, Have you any of the Scammell , F88. F86 & the 6wheeler Seddon , How are you keeping, also Barney & Gerry long time no see, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry,
Sorry these are the only photo’s I have of McKenna’s wagons there were some more down on display the yard (I believe) but I don’t know who would have them now, these were just some I took and found recently, I wish I had taken more, especially of the new MAN F90 22-421 with twin splitter I drove after the Scania as it could catch pigeon’s and I never gave it no mercy :smiling_imp: . I left there in 1996. Jerry now works for Jenkinson’s from Penrith, Barney is still running the one wagon and I believe providing training to drivers for the driver CPC. Kevin M (the brother in law) he set up on his own doing a mobile vehicle paint chip repair service. If I see them I will pass on your good wishes. Paddy is still on the go, but he doesn’t get far these days.

regards,

Kevin.

G.Lowdon Ltd, North Road Garage Seaton Burn, remember them. A old haulage firm from way back, even ran charabancs in the old days, Taken over by the United, Thomas Tilling Group, they ran Bedfords in the thirties. Lowdons Garage sold everything, Bikes , Batteries, Carbide for the miners lamps, Accumulators for the old wireless,s. & would repair anything that could be mended, Arthur Lowdon who is still about, who is in fact one of my best mates, could turn his hand to anything, Welding, Soldering Panel Beating, you name it he could do it just like his old dad Geo, the old Magnetos was one of their specialties, of in those days there were lots of cars & motor bikes had them. Arthur was leading coal off the Town Moor opencast site the day he was 17 years old, with an X army Bedford in 1945.His sons still run tippers, & David also does repairs for customers, He is very much a chip of the old block, he also can turn his hand to anything,so if any one wants the impossible repair job done Lowdons is the place to go, there must be some of you oldies know what im saying. Regards Larry, Originally From Seaton Burn.

I was always going to ask if they’d sell me that big cardboard tiger they had in the window & one night someone knocked the window out & nicked it

hi larry, there was an outfit that used to load sand off the beach at cresswell, think they where from ashington or newbiggin area. they lost a bray load while loading the heavy grit sand off the beach, the machine op kept digging into the same trench, got to the water level under the sand and it sucked the machine down, it was stuck there for 2 tides, think they were called tweedy or something similar do you remember them, bumper

Hello Bumper, I remember Tweedies Im sure they had red tippers, some D1000 Fords, but the only haulier I can remember having the rights to remove sand from Cresswell was Woods of Blyth, two sites Hemscott Hill Bells farm, & Blakemoor, Northern Aggregattes took over when old Lance Wood died, thats when we got the job,it was good for a long time, then as usual they wanted it done for nowt, so by by N/A. The bloke that was on the loading shovel John Falloon new the beach like the back of hand, but the sand quantity diminished rapidly so N/A decided to take it off the dunes. After that Charlie Thompson was doing it. Regards Larry

Hi all
does anyone have photos of Eagle Road Services from Abbotsford road Felling, they ran mainly dodges until taken over by Fergusons, or ATS when they ran Ford D series artics, or B M English an agricultural merchant from East Rainton near Houghton le Spring, they had a small fleet consisting of an ERF and Atki artic a Foden S40 eight wheel bulker and a Guy six wheel bulker. My Dad drove for these in the 60s and 70s
Cheers
Mick

Les Eagleton used to do a bit of wheeling & dealing can remember picking up ex WD vehicles from Ruddington nr Nottingham, mainly Land Rovers, some were smashed up and had to be lifted onto the top deck others towed onto the bottom. We used to drop them at Felling.

Normans cafe. Approx mid 80’s i think. Dan.

Aye I remember Les when he was on the Fossway at Brough Park in the fifties he was the same then, he dealt in anything on wheels, he also had a place in Northumberland Ave, Howdon, he used to race stock cars at Brough Park, & sold a lot of old cars to people to be used for this purpose. well known to every one in those days, I can mid giving him 2bob for a carberetter for my 1934, Vauxhall. I bought off his mate that had Newbridge Street Motors Reg KY 7652… They also had a building on Stepney Bank to store cars… Regards Larry
