Just been on the WH Williams thread and bodybuilders have been mentioned. We mostly dealt with Robsons at Blackhill, Randolph at West Auckland and Dependable at Swalwell. Can anyone name any other local firms building tippers and flats.
And here’s one for Larry – can you remember when tipper bodies had to be calibrated by the local weights and measures dept.

Yes, there was the Northern Coach Builders, Claremont Rd I think., & Duncan Stanners at morpeth did for a while. Regards Larry

Hi, remember Stanley bodies down at Bedale. Ran by Harry Lions. He ran tippers, Lyons of Bedale. I think he was taken over by R&A Young / Hargreaves? And then there is Aliweld, based at Stargate Ind Est. They are still tradeing. Two lads run it, Tobi and Trev. Propper gentlemen. Regards Gurty.

G715PRM.it was ex Stobart. The FH is now gone. Peter has a 54 plate Renault Premium and a DAF 75. That FH would be like driving a boat when it was full of livestock.

That was it though I’m sure Davey Humble had it for a while, I think he pulled for Durhams. That FH was a prime example   god it was awful

It could well of been Davey Humbles. I’m sure He worked for Durhams. Also Billy Burr from Fairmoor at Morpeth. He lives next door to my Gran. I remember Billy had a volvo F7 tractor unit followed by ex Siimpson bros Scania P112, A800NNA. I’l ask Billy when i’m next down there.

A800NNA

A800NNA was driven by John Leadbitter who later became transport manager at Simpsons and is nw back driving for Port of Tyne.

them 4 wagons bring back memories A800 was Norman Stokoes, the one next to it was Leadbitters, the next one is PJR which was David Urwins and lastly KCU. Alan Clarke drove that one, wonder where they all are now, well 3 of them anyway.

10237654Here is a North East family firm which has scaled down now but still has one wagon running - McKenna’s of Bardon Mill.

Kevin can you remember a firm with red wagons from Bardon Mill, They had Traders , & a 6wheeler Atki, did a lot for Intercity Transport, also the infamous Dougie Young,I wonder if hes still about ,what a character he was, never a dull moment where he was concered, Regards Larry

Lawrence Dunbar:

Larry they were eventually taken over by GKN who inevitably closed them down as they had a depot at Blaydon.
The Leeds depot was just off Dewsbury Rd. The Manchester depot was on Tenax Rd, it is now a scrap merchants
yard. regards Kev.

I new some drivers that worked for Les Eagleton, I dont know if they are still about, but I will try & find out, & hopefully they might come up with some photos, Charlie, [Skipper] Bissett drove a 6 wheeler Dodge for them in the 60s , he was the top man in those days, ill see if I can contact him, he may be able to help. Regards Larry

Hi Lawrence
Thanks for that Lawrence. I can remember the dodge six wheeler with the LAD cab, my dad used to drive either a four wheel dodge or an artic. Unfortunately he died about twenty years ago so the only memories i have are my own when i used to go with him i was only 10 or 11 then.
cheers

I havent seen anyone yet, but can name some drivers, Gordie Henderson, Maurice Cox. Laurence Bamford, Billy ? left & got a job selling steam cleaners,GH. worked for Fergie before Eagle, so he ended up back there, another one just come to mind, Terry Scott., does any of these names ring a bell ? , Regards Larry

i remember geordie henderson well larry , he ended up dock shunter at blythe . he was really good at the job . if i was running late , i would get word to him and he would get the notes and have the reels put out ready , never saw him without a smile on his face , cheers , dave

Aye Gordie was a good lad, The Fs treat him like Sh. Hes retired now of course. I saw him quite a while ago in Blyth,he was just the same,a big smile when he saw me, The good old days Eh. Regards Larry.

Hi Lawrence
Geordie Henderson rings a bell and Maurice Cox was related to my Aunts husband, i had forgot about that. He became an owner driver and i think he ran a scania artic and possibly another scania rigid iirc. Jimmy White was the fitter there who was friends with my dad and lived in felling. My dad was called reg dawson and lived in stanley he started with eagle when their depot was across the road from abbotsford road was it stoneygate lane? i think it is now a scrapyard.i can remember my dad driving les eagletons car once which i think was a jaguar xk120. i can remember going with him to load out of finneys seeds on bensham bank, wadkin bursgreen at fencehouses and churchills at blaydon. i never went with him on journeys as he was tramping all week. he taught me how to rope and sheet at the age of 13, but sadly i went on to work on bulk tippers and tankers so never did become experienced at it. i can still rope on though, sheeting would probably leave a lot to be desired.
thanks
Mick
