Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Aye they were hard worked and its not as if they had top of the range gear to do it with either, most of them ended up at Thompsons when Dougie packed in. Some of Andersons went to Thompsons and a couple went to Tulips when i worked there and given the choice i would of rather woked with them rater than blokes my own age, they were proper old school drivers who you could learn from, blokes like Morris Robinson who went to work for Lowdens before coming to Tulips, Dennis Gill and Geordie Liddle came straight to tulips from Andersons. These were the same men that were coming the other way when i was on the way to tip lime with my dad in that F7 of Thompsons. Priceless.

Hello Larry. The scania 112 Allan Henry had was a sleeper cab. THH 173X if i remember rightly. It was ex Peter Hinchcliffe, Carlisle i’m sure. They still have it i think. The Henry’s also had an A reg Volvo F12 which i think was ex Cleanaway. I may be wrong but i think Alan Cowan may of been the buyer of Dougie Marshalls Day cab 112. At least I remember him having one. John Manners at Battle Bridge, Alnwick also had a day cab 2 series unit. Dan.

The original F10. 38 tonnes. 299bhp. went like a train. Dan

Nice pics Dan, are the FLs still in service or have they all gone now?

The FL’s are all away now. Peter Law, F Law & Son of Whalton ran the 6 wheeler for a while. It was Re Registered as N952 WPT as dad kept the N51 OVK reg and put it on the FM12. Not sure where it is now. The K reg tractor unit was ex ASDA and was bought to replace The F reg FL10 tractor unit we had stolen. It was traded in for the T reg FM12 tractor unit which is now a rigid. I drove the 6X4 Rigid for about 4 months after passing my test. It Was bombproof and i learnt a lot driving it. It could pull for fun and would sit on the limiter up hill and down dale!
