Hello truckers boy, you will have a few of us old gits wondering who your dad is come on own up!!! Last I heard of Ritchie Wright he was still running one vehicle but that was about a year ago. I know he is a year or two older than me so he may have retired now. Hope that helps regards kevmac47. PS. 80 weeks to go!!!

My dad is Ian Warwick (spot the last name  )
My granda is James richard Lambton - was known as Dicky lambton also worked for gallagher’s, applegarths, trailerco, gurteens & a hell of alot more.

Hi Guy’s, I just came upon this and its what I was looking for all along- I do remember your Granda Dicky Lambton as he was one of the first drivers I spoke to on my first day as an apprentice fitter sept 1985 and his was the first vehicle I helped service It was a Volvo F10 TFT499Y one of four we had along with two Daf 3300 and a couple of F7 tractor units X115/116JRG. I believe the F10 went to Reeve trspt but I saw your Granda a few years later and he remembered me but by then I was workshop foreman. I wonder if he remembers those two apprentices starting out on their careers way back in 1985. I have a picture of one of the F10s TFT497Y but thats about it which is why I was looking for this site in the first place. I believe I was the longest serving fitter at Gurteens so will be able to remember most of the fleet reg/drivers too. Hope this helps KG3

Hi KG3, Good to see you on here mate. I think between you and i we will be able to remember most reg’s and drivers names from long ago. And we should be able to name & shame them!!

Your right there, but we had some caractors driving the wagons- Like Billy Nell, Tony Cooper and topper brown,I hope that I can shed some light on a few vehicles from the workshop point of view for those that saw the wagons day in day out. I wish I had more photos but I seem to remember all the ones I had in my office were yours Gurty and went when it was all over. I am sure somewhere I have some that you took on my camera when you did that photo shoot at Mc Calls quarry with the Daf 8W. I think I have a picture of you also out the back of the workshop with Trev and little Malcolm Clish on top of C494 grab wagon. Unfortunatly its finding them thats the problem- I will keep looking. KG3

I drove TFT 497Y it was double shifted before I got it, I drove it during the miners strike tramping the hythes around Mistley Quay and Colchester, also scrap to Sheerness out of Bedford and Talbots in Coventry, would love to see a photo of my “home” I remember going into Clanwern steel works as a convoy the weekend that taxi driver was killed when some arse threw a paving stone off a motorway bridge onto his car!!! Is Topper Brown still on the go I have a photo of him and the youngen who dad drove too was that Billy burden they live in Sunderland

Aye, that will be Billy Burden who lives in Washington and his son Barry who lived in Sunderland. I see Billy quite alot as he does some driveing for Albert. Barry i havent seen for a few years. I dont know about Tony Brown “Topper”. If he is still with us he will be a canny age by now. He retired before we sold up in 1998 so am assumeing he was 65 then? Anybody on here help us out? What about you KG3■■

Another Haulage Co, Davison & Adamson from Birtley anyone have any photos they had plenty of motors, on distance work, & also over the water, I remember their tippers running to The Isle of Anglesea to back load with stuff for the Alcan at Lynemouth, I was doing it myself in the 70s It was James;s job, plenty of graft in those days when we could make a bit of dosh, well I did it was hard work, but Im retired now, well sort of, Still enjoying life & the crack on this thread, Regards Larry

Hi Guy’s,with being in the midlands now I don’t see anybody and it would be good to catch up, however I did bump into Derek Caterer the other month when I was up visiting my son in Barnard castle. Maybe we could get together some time gurty and put some names to those reg numbers, i already started thinking and riting down all the drivers i remember but cant get the last parts of the reg plates right for some !!! its an age thing !!! Davison & Adamson’s yard was the first place you came to as you turned into Station Lane Ind Est at Birtley. Next door was George Barker’s Transport. At one point they were agents for White or Mack trucks. They used to run a few of them as well.
Norman Stokoe from Wrekenton was the foreman fitter (sometimes the only one). The transport manager was a big tall lad but I cannot remember his name. I think it was Billy but not sure.

Hello Larry, is that Cousland as in Dalkieth, Bain Bros lime store?

Yes it was Bains where he used to go to. I was his job, & the Thompsons Bought Bains out, thats maybe when Dougie packed in.? Larry

Larry this is the F7 my dad drve for Thompsons B638 GCN named cousland warriour (sad the things you remember) around the time they took over Bains.

at the time Bains had a couple of 6 wheeler mercs and a couple of 4 wheeler mercs that ended up coming to Prudhoe being replaced with 4 F7s 2 8wheelers like the one in the pic and 2 c reg 6 wheelers, they later got 2 8 wheeler FL10s and 2 FL10 artics.

I went all over with my dad in that F7 on saturday mornings and during the school holidays with lime, places like Dalkieth, Jedburgh, Castle Douglas Curries at Dumfries, Baldoon, Gillons at Perth as well as farms all over. And no matter what time we set off Dougie Marsalls or Andersons of Westerhope would of already been there and we would pass them on there way back.

Very true Dougie never used to stop himself never mind his driver, they reckoned he paid top Dollar. I remember one of his drivers Gerald I think his name was .He was allways first at Bobby Kells, but he had been to Cousland first, he then did two loads to Cochranes Wharf & loaded lime ready for the next day, now thats what I call a bloody good days work, so he earned his top Dollars. Regards Larry

Gerald ended up at Thompsons when Dougie packed in along with many others, i once asked one of Dougies old drivers if he had any photos of Dougies wagons, his reply was son we didnt have time for our bate never mind time to take photos.

Well now I once saw Dougie having a p …s eating a sandwich & tipping a bit off because the load was heavey, never stopped. Happy days Larry
