Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Re Novofreights, the gaffer was called Donald, he was ex BRS, he did the work out of Hood Haggies, Willington Quay,& had some connection with Handcock of Allendale, I remember the Ford arics,his office was on the Quayside, he was very pally with Les Bolam, he owned Cargotransorters Ltd, which he started when Kirtleys Shipping & Forwarding packed in… They were a close knit lot in those days, but did very well in the haulage game. Regards Larry

My grandad passed away 3 years ago this month. He used to drive for finefare foods in washington and élan international based at Washington I’d love some pics of the above lorries I’ve looked on tinternet n not fund any. He worked for a lot of firms but those are the two he spent a lot of time working for and it would be nice to see what he drove.

Seeing as we are into remembering names from long ago, I was going through my old mans stuff a little while ago and came across a list of drivers, probably something to do with the union but anyway see how many names are rcognised, they all worked for Steenburgs at the time but no doubt at many other places too. Here goes;

Bill Ashworth, John Dickman, Jock Mundell, Peter Green, Ray Smith, Tony Hyde, Tony Chapman, Nigel Smart,
Alfie Greives, Ernie Dobson, Gill Todd, Bobby Duggan, Dicky Oliver, Geordie Storey, Don Bryden, Alan Patrick,
Jimmy Simmons, Jimmy Logan, Joe Pepper, Bob Aitchenson, George Collis, Cliff Natton, Ken Hogg, Ray Hogg, Bob Best, Brian Maiden, Bob Dowling , Lenny North, Phil Gent, George Woolfe, Dicky Akenhead, Jimmy Hepple, Ronnie Hodgen, Stan Bolam, Arthur Marsh, Joe Brown.
Probably a few more that arn’t on the list and I know one or two more but can’t remember their names, I know some of these arn’t around anymore including my old man, any of these ring any bells!
Cheers Franky.

Quite a few names I remember,Logan, Pepper, Aichie R.IP.Collis,North, Gent,Hepple(highspeed).When’s the next model out Franky?? regardskevmac47

Gav I know my old man knew your Father, I heard him mention his name a few times, when my Dad packed in driving he had one or two factory jobs in Washington but places didn’t stay in business, it seemed, for five minutes in those days (early Eighties) in Washington, it was supposed to be the new big industrial area and with jobs a plenty, he was at RCA and MEM, big places that closed along with many smaller firms, before getting a start at Fine Fare in the warehouse.
After a few years and nearing retirement age he went into the gatehouse and was able to meet up again with many drivers he knew before. He was good pals with your Dad as he was one of the old school, with a few others. Sorry to hear he passed away, my father died also around the same time aged 81. My younger Brother drove for the Hucknall depot, they had ERF’s and Scania’s, Washington tended to have Seddon Atkinsons and Buffalo’s before that. I could never get a job there as the patter was they didn’t employ anybody if a relative worked at the same place, I had a couple of mates worked there and it was a good job so they said but changed once Gateway took over.
Cheers Franky.

Hello GavMc My dad (Bob Casey) used to work with Morris at Fine Fare they were good mates my dad started there when it first opened in the early seventies, we used to live in Donwell and on a friday i used to wait outside of Fine Fares gates for me dad coming home i used to knock around with young Morris and Keith, didnt his brother used to have a furniture van, Longworths removals. happy days.
