Im sure Armstongs of Gateshead had a depot there before moving to Sawmill Lane.Langley, they used to do a lot of work for Hindhaughs, then it was taken over by Beresford Foods. In the early days they ran some Seddons, before moving on to Volvos.about 1970–ish.

Armstrongs moved in after golden then they moved down behind Bensham Road before moving to Durham I,ve just spent the afternoon at Lawrence Hauxwells and he,s dead upset that you never mentioned him when you named the JR drivers he,s going to start telling tales about what went on at Baxters. He said I also have to remind you of Geordie Marshall andRalph Blake both had 6wheeler Marshalls on the Domesto job bit before my time i,m only 64 just a bairn
Well, tell Laurence it was just 4 wheeler drivers that mentioned, relating to photo of the LAD cabbed Albion that Bumper put on none of those names I mentioned were artic drivers, . He drove more artics than rigids, so tell him the next time I see him Ill buy him a pint. Regards Larry

Ask him if he can remember the regs, of the two 6wheelers ? Ralphy Blakes got stolen from Peters of Hadfield cafe & found in the east end of London minus its load of soap powder bound for West Thurrock, & no wheels.

Hi Lawrence
you mentioned novofreight being one of the firms running from the quayside. my dad drove for them a short while he had a D series ford artic iirc they were red motors but i can only remember him picking the wagon up from dunston perhaps it was where they loaded from? he also used to drive for eagle road services and then fergies when they took them over i can remember him leading paper reels from blyth docks with either a foden or aec mandator artic. he then led cement out of eastgate with a dennis four wheeler and left shortly after. this would be in the late sixties early seventies
Mick

Aye Jim I remember those as a young’n, I think Tony Hyde drove a Badger too and my old mans Trader was 507 FUP, it used to shift that one until Stevey Spoors blew the engine up when Dad was on holiday. Those Badgers used to bounce about a bit though when solo. You must have got FBB 806C around the same time as Dad got GTN 412C the first one plated for 32 Ton. When you think back at all the hauliers around at that time its no wonder lads could chuck it on a Friday and start somewhere else on Monday, all those skills learnt that are almost lost now in today’s industry, of course it wasn’t all fun, I can remember me Fatha coming home shattered some nights and the times when he stopped in the Ship for one too many and drove the unit home! He used to get some bollickings off Ma for that.
Yes it would be nice to get Laurence on here, The reg, of Lofties AEC was AFT18B. & Ralphs was CVK???B They were both the same colour maroon with no signwriting, although Ralphys was lined in white. I wonder if they are still about ? anybody know, Laurence like myself are getting on in life & have done some miles in our day, of course there are lots out there like us, come on you oldies lets hear from you & enjoy a bit crack. Regards Larry
