Frankydobo:
Finally got this model completed of my Fathers 32:4:220 Rolls engined Seddon Diesel BBB 675J and York 40ft trailer, I only had a small Polaroid pic to go off so most of it is memory and some brochure info and pics of Seddons on this site to see where various components fitted. I can’t remember exactly how many of these units turned up new in 1971, maybe four but I did come across two cabs in Coats scrap yard around 82 and one was from this vehicle, I managed to rescue the Seddon badge from the rad filler cover and still have it. Maybe brings back a few memories for any ex Ouseburn lads.
It hopefully captures the British transport look of the Seventies which was to change in the next decade. Cheers Franky.
Another great model Franky, I don’t know how you have the patience. You will probably get a nasty letter or a visit from HSE cos you only used ropes to fasten the load on How did we manage to secure our loads before ratchet straps? I dont think we had as many rollovers or shed loads as modern drivers seem to have eh?? What really puzzle me is how do they manage to turn them over on a straight road like the M1■■ Am I missing something?? Ps great “dollies” in the ropes . regards kevmac47
Would I be right in saying they had Green wagons Thames Traders ?, My late relation Jeff Smiles Had there old depot ? Crookhill Transport. ? Regards Larry
Another Haulier from that area. Ken Allison with his Fodens, allthough he did have a Renault Saviam, I think it was leased from Clark Taylor, He was on the spratts with it, it had a coloum gear shift I think ?. Canny lad Ken I wonder if he is still about ?. Regards Larry

Cheers Kev, the timber was actually a last minute thing so I could get some pics together as they will be sent off with some build pictures and an article to Truck Model World mag. I put the same pic on the magazine forum and one of the lads said the same thing, I’ll replace them later with some steel work or something similar chained down. I was reminded though when replying to him of the time I was with my Dad in the real motor and we had loaded timber full out and two stacks high, he placed kickers along the side raves and when the timber was loaded the stacks leaned into each other, I asked if he was roping them but he said “Nah, they wont go anywhere” and explained what he had done, I think we only went to Hexham but I never took my eyes off the nearside mirror! Dad just chuckled to himself watching my face likely. He was on that job about Three Months and had no problems, I don’t think I would have risked that when I was driving but like you say it was another time and probably showed the difference in skill and experience drivers had then. Cheers Franky.

They were green don’t know about the Traders; Glendinnings bought them out in the late 50’s for the licences and ran out of Crookhill for about 10-15 years before the yard was taken over by Jeff Smiles. The fleet then were all 4x2s; All Bedfords apart from a couple of TS3s. One hanging meat truck the rest were tippers.
The Bedfords and Commers were gradually phased out and replaced with Leyland, Albion & BMC 4x2,6x2,8x4.
Mostly tippers with a few flats and a Beaver fitted with a mixer in Strongcrete colours and not forgetting the hanging meat container which was transfered to a split screen BMC.
All the drivers were taken on including Ray Dance who drove the meat van; Glendinnings inherited the 4 Johnson brothers here as well, two of which remained with the company for the rest of there working lives.
Thank you for the info, very interesting. Can you remember a firm called Roddam , also green livery Im nearley sure the son was Jonny, & drive a 4wheeler 50s60s. He used to come on to the Quayside in those old days. looking for distance work. Regards Larry.

Is J D Maw still running around, I remember seeing his motors around Boldon Colliery, in the early nineties, when I used to drive buses for Go ahead group
When I drove for the Northern, 3 of the drivers, ventured down the O/D route, running out of Barrasford with there tippers 1 had a leyland constructor the other 2 had I believe Volvo’s, I think 2 of them are now finished, Colin ( think that’s his name) was a lazy got and only turned up if he felt like it, then I heard he turned his motor over when tipping, Billy Wright went and drove for Greggs of Gosforth and the lucky sod ended up as transport manager at the NDC at longbenton site, the last guy was called Gordon from Sunderland( not his fault) but I don’t know what happened to him ( I once heard he’s was working outta Tesside), I wanted to be an O/D but didn’t have the funds or CPC at the time, so I stayed driving buses, from Gateshead metro to Metrocentre (X66) every day for 3 years, untill I got a job driving for ASDA RDC 8 at Washington.
Still see one or two tippers with MAW on the door, though not sure if they are JD. Six wheeler Volvos I think, white cab and body but also have one of the aggregate company logos on them. Can’t remember which, I will take note next time I spot one.
