f7sid have you any info or pics of Geordie Bamborough’s from Chester le Street used to run tippers. I believe they ended up running out of Portobello Ind. Est. but used to be based under the viaduct at Cheater years ago. I had a cousin called Raymond Hodgson worked as a fitter for them, believe he commited suicide, or so I was told.

ive found this one, dont know where i got it from and i cant remember them to be homest, must of been before my time, when did they pack in. do you or anyone else remember another small tipper firm from chester le street whalton a father and two sons running out of arc houghton le spring in the early 80s the father was called harry i think and he had a 4 wheeler daf and the sons had 6 wheeler hinos new at the time, they were painted green

The vehicle in the photot is an AEC Marshall Eight. the first of which were built for George Bambrough with Marshall Mechanics and a Mammomth Major Chassis, which gave a payload of 16 1/2 tons which was at least a. ton more than was possible on most eight wheelers at the time

My dad (Andy McAdam) worked for Geordie Bamborough’s before I was born drove a Thames Trader iirc sadly my Dad passed away few years back but I still pop in and see his Mate Tommy Liddle about once a month I’ll ask him about Raymond he worked there same time as my dad

Gallachers 143.Done few wide loads with John Scott when he had it.

Never seen Scotty since I left Gallachers 2003

Still old firms come to my mind ie, Hewitts of Morpeth a very old haulage Co, Tippers Pole Bogies for timber had Fodens Thornycrofts Leylands Thames Traders K1050 Dodge atic driven by a Polish Driver Bernard I think he was called never went home when the war finished, good grafter as I remember, Alec Hewitt retired at Fergys as did Harry Perverley Harry drove a Foden 2stroke and mind you he could make that thing talk, you could hear it long before it came into sight I had a sound all of its own, great, music to a drivers ears. So someone must remember them as I do & there must be some photos about somewhere. Regards Larry

Hi Larry

Did Hewitts have some grey AEC 8 wheel flats ?

Not that I can remember, their wagons were red they did a lot of timber haulage & steel out of the old Redheugh Steel Co, at Dunston , they also hauled roadstone & tar from Harecragg Quarry north of Felton.,…

I worked for Smilers in the 60s, there was some great lads there, I would be pleased to hear from any of them that are still about,I can name a few of realley good lads that worked there the same time as I did IE. Eddie Harding, Jimmy Blackburn both from Prudhoe. Billy Watson, Dennis Cook,[Cookie as Fred Smiles used to call him].Bobby Jaimeson.Wilf Clydesdale & his brother Norman, Meggsy, Tommy Green, Geo Calvert. Billy Scott, Geo Skinner. Alan Talbot. Regards Larry

Eeeh now I remember Hewitt’s & where I’m sat now is spitting distance from their old yard which then became Waters & Robson’s garage & then a little group of houses called Pottery Bank Court, can anyone remember Potts the coal man down Mitford Road in Morpeth?

tyneside:

Moody had a fair few grey AEC 8 leggers but mostly tippers

Yes I remember Potts, also my dear old Mam used to go to Hewitts when she was a bairn and play with Racheal Hewitt, My mothers mam was a Boiston, & her uncle had wagons at Fisher Lane Seaton Burn , do you remember them ?

I can but only vaguely (spelling?) just behind the services?

I’ve seen on here somewhere a Watsons Bedford (blue & white) I remember them parking down near Swinneys somewhere in the back of Dacre Street also a few of Fergie’s can’t remember if it was some kind of car/lorry park or not but they built the bus station (that’s just gone) on top of it

Wor Ronnie (peaker) used to driver for Jeff a long time since of course

Was it Elliott’s at Morpeth or Bedlington or somewhere up there that had the AEC 8 wheelers ■■?

How about Harry Singh from Longhirst he had the little petrol station by the railway lines, I think he ran Fiats, I remember his place being full of old cars, or Trevor Strange from Newbiggin he apparantly just locked the doors one Friday night & all the stuff lay there for years until he died & Armstrong the coal/scrap man from Newbiggin cleared the place & got a LAD cabbed Albion, a Thames Trader (still loaded) a Commer Maxiload & a little Commer tractor unit with Scammell coupling plus a pile of Moggy Minor Vans & some other tat

Elliotts on Coopies Lane were AEC men IIRC but I cant for the life of me picture their motors ie colour etc.

Think Elliotts at Morpeth were usually a mid grey colour with white sign writing. I remember a they had quite a few AEC 8 wheelers
