There’s not many long serving drivers left at Fergies now Gary, most have retired or left after the Waugh’s takeover. Davy Clark is still there, Hughie Baird and Micky Beer retired last year, Albert Kelly is still there (over 30 years now) most of the Wooler drivers left when Fergies lost the Scotts work although Alan Easton stayed on as a nightshift driver until he retired a couple of years ago.Steve West is in the office. Bobby Nicholson went to James Bros. You probably know that Bob Brown died a few years ago but Alec Purvis is still in the office, due to retire at the back end of this year. Most of the trampers there now are new faces or ex Waughy’s men.

Any body got anything on Gurteens of Herrington. Cant find any reference anywhere for such a big tipper firm
Hi “oldsid”, my dad has loads of photos which i’ll dig out and get up loaded for you. I’ve only just heard about this but i’m already hooked. Did you work for him, maybe? Andrew.
Yes I did, I was begining to think it was all in my imagination!!! Some pics would be great I was up at Chevington and away tramping during the miners strike in the mid eighties
I’m Arthur’s son, Andrew. You might remember me? He is currently sorting through his photo’s for me to up load on here!! Hopefully by the weekend. Did you drive the F10’s or the little Scania’s?
Hello, Volvo F10 TFT 497Y numbers might be wrong may have been 397, there used to be an F7 with a strange exaust that stuck above the roofline, we used to call it the flying fishshop and the janker mobile as it was horrible as a sleeper and it was alledged you only got it if you were out of favour. your dear old dad once sacked me cos I reversed into the fuel pump island with a loaded trailer and burst a supersingle on the trailer. I was only a boy then and wouldnt say sorry so that was that. I went back on the skips then back on the artics a little later. He may remember, happy days.
What happened to the fleet
Hi, I remember that reg…you are right. There were four F10’s. Can remember two F7 tractors as well!! Will ask my dad about those being Its nice to see photos of long established haulage like Gurteens Gurteen A & Sons 4 Millers Hill, Herrington Burn, Houghton le Spring Tel. 132. General. Sand & Gravel, 1 Vehicle 30cwt, Open. 1931 Regards Larry
