Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

I can remember those early F10s coming into Derwenthaugh coke works when they were brand new, everyone was out of there wagons having a look at them, hopefully Andrew has some photos.

Does any one remember Tommy Nelson & Marshall Eglin from Connset area they drove for Gurteens in the 70s running gravel from Moot Law Quarry to RMC Brunswick plant they had 6wheel rievers then Tommy got a F86 Volvo & I think Eglin went on to a Foden for a while Regards Larry

Hello all

Found these two lists of tipper operators who were RHA members in the Tyneside area. List is from approx 1963. Some of them still operating today but some of them long gone and forgotten

Falcon Transport on the second list, would that be the same Falcon Transport that had a garage at Highfield, Rowlands Gill?
Used to run a couple of 4 wheel Dodge’s in the mid 70’s if its the same one.

I think your right the same Falcon had a couple of Thames Trader tippers the were on the lime job from the ICI at Prudhoe 59/60s leading it to the Quayside & tipping into Ships using ramps Regards Larry

I dont think these have had a mention on here yet.

Any body got anything on Gurteens of Herrington. Cant find any reference anywhere for such a big tipper firm

Hi “oldsid”, my dad has loads of photos which i’ll dig out and get up loaded for you. I’ve only just heard about this but i’m already hooked. Did you work for him, maybe? Andrew.

Yes I did, I was begining to think it was all in my imagination!!! Some pics would be great I was up at Chevington and away tramping during the miners strike in the mid eighties

I’m Arthur’s son, Andrew. You might remember me? He is currently sorting through his photo’s for me to up load on here!! Hopefully by the weekend. Did you drive the F10’s or the little Scania’s?

Hello, Volvo F10 TFT 497Y numbers might be wrong may have been 397, there used to be an F7 with a strange exaust that stuck above the roofline, we used to call it the flying fishshop and the janker mobile as it was horrible as a sleeper and it was alledged you only got it if you were out of favour. your dear old dad once sacked me cos I reversed into the fuel pump island with a loaded trailer and burst a supersingle on the trailer. I was only a boy then and wouldnt say sorry so that was that. I went back on the skips then back on the artics a little later. He may remember, happy days.
What happened to the fleet

Hi, I remember that reg…you are right. There were four F10’s. Can remember two F7 tractors as well!! Will ask my dad about those being the punishment vehicles!! That sounds exactly like my dad, very hot headed!! Back in 1998 the whole business was sold and the trading name changed two or three times but now is known as SITA. I think there will only be 1 driver still there you may remember…Jimmy Turnbull? I see him often on the spine road. I now drive for Banks Brothers Transport delivering coal to either Alcan power station or Blyth Docks!

Marshall Eglin still lives in Consett and keeps in touch with my dad, Arthur. We hadnt seen him for ages until 2003 when i took my own wagon to barney truck show and he recognised the name and came to chat…Don’t know what happened to Tommy Nelson? The driver with the dress jacket was Tony Cooper who lived in Seaham? I met his son in a pub about a month ago and we got chatting…He is still fighting fit!!

I remember Tony he once brought me a pie in cos I said my missus wouldnt give me any bait, grand old fella. there was a driver who wore a suede jacket and had a tash I, sure he was on the eith wheelers was that not Tommy Nelson
Jimmy lived on the wimpy estate in dairy lane in Houghton
