Granville bell ebchester

Granville bell, this was Ron Tailfords lorry when he worked for granville

Frankydobo:
There was Dinnington Colliery west of Wideopen, it might have been the place. Interesting bit on Baxters, I remember the Commers in the Sixties when around and about with my Dad. He always spoke well of the Baxters lads and I think Steenburgs had the warehousing after Baxters, I can recall being told something similar. My Father also told me Steenburgs had a Steam crane on the Quayside, I’ve got an old 20’s brochure showing the warehouse etc, I’ll put it on here. Larry you possibly knew my old man, here’s a pic below of him standing infront of the Seddon he drove, I’ve also been busy with a model of the same vehicle and I’m also in the process of completing a York trailer to go with it. Cheers Franky.

Well Franky i think you are right about the steam crane i heard the old timmers at Baxters mention it Ouseburn Transport goes back to 1920s they had warehouses on the Quayside the tel no was Central 3752

Mark, is Granville Bell part of the Bells of Ashington family? I seem to remember that name from when I worked at Waugh’s at the time we were taking delivery of the 1418s. regards kevmac47

kenny does jackie Robson originate from Burnhope? I was talkin to Alan Morrison the other day and he was asking if i knew him from my days at Wrights but i can not place him.

greek:
Dont know how many of you North East lads on here heard about the Hargreaves Driver killed around the Fishburn area a few weeks ago cant remember I might have posted some thing at the time , anyway they have just identified him officially Jackie Robson a Burnhope lad who I worked with for a few yrs at Ge Armstrongs & his funeral is mon 4th at 12-30 Mountset Crematoriam Flint Hill for anybody that knew him & might want to attend.
Thought this North East post would be the best place to post Regards all Kenny

Yes fisher hes a Burnhoper but I cant remember him from there but it is 48yr since i left. Jackie was smallish medium biuld Glasses mousey coloured hair if you were in a pub or cafe with the lads jackie would usualy be on the bandit. Hi. Just found out about this site. I probably know loads of lads on here. I’m Allen Wright and I work for Colton Plant Hire in Birtley. Started off riding about with my grandfather, Tommy Wright, when he worked for Cawthorne & Sinclair, then he worked for Billy Spry ie Transport Services UK, then Barkers of Birtley and then H P Thompson & Son at Pelton Fell - that’s the few I can remember. I myself started going for rides out with Henry Thompson’s son, Ian, who taught me to drive. When leaving school I started at Albany Motors - at the time he had the whites. Three of the drivers were Bill Thompson, little Bobby (known as Milky Bar) - both now working for JR Adams and the last driver was a big lad called Mick who wore glasses (can’t remember his second name). Also an old fella who drove a Scania 111 called Ray. I then went on to work at Lincoln Haulage. At the time we had F86s, F7s, F88s, a couple of Iveco’s and a few DAF’s - then to Gurteen’s driving a mini-skip until I passed my Class 1, then back to Lincoln’s, then to Thomas Bros, then to Barker’s of Birtley. Anybody remember Totcha and Tommy Smith? I then went on to Turk Plant Hire, then to Arthur Nicholl’s at Dunston. I then worked for an owner driver (now a friend of mine) called Allan Stephenson and now, finally, at Colton Plant Hire where I’ve been for the last 15 years. I’ve got loads of old photos which I’ll scan and put on eventually - hopefully it might jog a few people’s memories! Excellent site - fetched back loads of memories, very nostalgic! I’d be grateful if anyone had any pictures of Barkers of Birtley or Transport Services UK, or anybody really who knew my grandfather - he was a character! Cheers!

Nice to see you on Alan your motor still looking very tidy seeit most days going into the hell hole behind Coltons yard.Do you remember lad called Phil Newton he used to work for Komatsu over the road that you do work for.

Aye - Phil was the salesman. He went to Finning’s but I haven’t seen him for a few months now so don’t know if he’s still there - but I’ll ask my gaffer tomorrow.
